How do social networks and physical distance jointly shape the effectiveness of interpersonal collaboration within organizations?
The authors study how physical distance enters organizational network explanations of collaboration: It may relate to collaboration through the key components of tie strength—communication frequency and affective closeness within focal ties—while conditioning the collaborative value of network cohesion surrounding those ties.
The authors test these arguments using longitudinal dyadic data collected before and after the relocation of two regional offices of a global pharmaceutical firm. Their baseline-adjusted models track collaborations reported at both waves and combine organizational network surveys, inter-desk walking distances, and dyadic assessments of perceived collaboration effectiveness.
Monte Carlo estimates support negative indirect associations between physical distance and collaboration effectiveness through reduced communication frequency and affective closeness. The affective pathway is significantly larger; together, the two pathways account descriptively for 52.3% of the estimated association.
The authors also find that increases in network cohesion are more strongly associated with collaboration effectiveness among dyads that moved farther apart. Incorporating physical distance therefore does not displace network explanations of collaboration; it clarifies how spatial conditions relate to collaboration, via tie strength, and when the network surrounding a collaborative relationship is most consequential.
