Masterclass Topic: Getting Sustainability Strategy Right
Prof. Jasjit Singh has been at INSEAD since 2004, where he is now a Professor of Strategy and the Paul Dubrule Chaired Professor of Sustainable Development. His focus areas are Sustainability Strategy, Inclusive Business, Innovation, Impact Entrepreneurship, Impact Investing, and Impact Evaluation.
Jasjit has written numerous widely-recognized research articles, practitioner articles and case studies. He is an associate editor at Management Science, and also serves on the editorial review boards for Strategic Management Journal and Organization Science.
Jasjit earned a PhD in Business Economics (Strategy) at Harvard Business School and an MA in Economics at Harvard University, having earlier obtained a BTech at IIT Delhi and a dual MS at Georgia Tech.
Synopsis:
In adopting the report “Our Common Future” from the Brundtland Commission in 1987, the UN defined its vision of “sustainable development”. But humanity is still struggling to realize this vision, with the environmental crisis and social inequalities being seen as more serious than ever before. The past corporate mindset of doing just the bare minimum to mitigate the societal risks and maintain a license to operate seems increasingly inadequate, as business leaders are being called upon to play a more proactive and positive role in addressing society’s grand challenges. For a business to make a meaningful and sustained contribution towards societal goals requires integrating a careful business strategy for ensuring long-term viability of the business with a rigorous impact strategy for tangible impact realization.
