Comprehensive Leadership Development in a Disruptive Age
Although you will already have achieved success as a functional expert, stepping up to general management can be a difficult and potentially risky transition. General managers need a comprehensive toolkit in order to make this transition from specialist to generalist a successful one.
The Transition to General Management programme is our flagship general-management-level programme. Delivered face-to-face and online, it is exclusively designed to equip you with all the skills and knowledge needed for your transition to general management.
The programme will give you the confidence to manage the complexity you will be facing as you develop from a specialist into a generalist. In short, INSEAD’s unique tools and insights will prepare you to succeed in this most difficult of transitions, the point in a manager’s career when they need to quickly expand their knowledge of business.
How you benefit
- Grounding in the key business disciplines. Leave with an integrated view of business by discovering key linkages across disciplines, thus helping you deliver effective general management decision-making
- Managing disruption. Gain insights into key issues facing general managers in today’s business environment, such as the challenges of digital disruption
- Enhanced leadership skills. Achieve increased confidence and managerial impact through our integrated Leadership Development Process
- Managing for value. Develop a keen understanding of how to “manage for value,” not managing the “metrics”
An international learning experience. Benefit from diversity in the classroom and, if you choose, more than one location of study
Learn while you work: access to online learning NEW!
To further embed your learning, the Transition to General Management programme now includes optional online learning. Should they wish, participants are able to choose one of 4 carefully selected INSEAD Open Online Programmes, designed to strengthen their knowledge in a variety of strategic areas essential for general management. The programmes to choose from are:
- Strategy in the Age of Digital Disruption
- Building Digital Partnerships and Ecosystems
- Innovation in the Age of Disruption
- INSEAD Gender Diversity Programme
Whilst the online programme lasts a total of 5 weeks, the time commitment is not as great as the face-to-face programme. Indeed, it requires three to five hours of work a week.
It will take place after the face-to-face component and should be attended within 18 months after completion of the face-to-face modules
This programme qualifies for the INSEAD Certificate in Global Management.

The Transition to General Management programme journey
"Before going on the programme I was very much focused on my job, not necessarily my career. I didn’t really have a clear path as to what I was doing really well, where I needed help, what I want to achieve." Clay Siemsen, past-participant of INSEAD’s Transition to General Management programme, talks about his time at INSEAD.
"My experience at INSEAD was definitely one of the most fundamental changes in my life." Julia Darvill, past-participant of INSEAD’s Transition to General Management programme, talks about her time at INSEAD.
The Transition to General Management programme is a four-week general-management-level programme designed to equip participants with all the skills and knowledge needed for their transition to general management.
“In the general management role you can no longer think just in one silo. You have to start thinking across the boundaries and unless you have an accelerated process to do that, you’ll be lost."
"After the Transition to General Management programme I had much more confidence, as well as a lot of curiosity and willingness to change. Having spent seven years in operational marketing I felt ready to take more risks and seize new opportunities."
"It was a standout course, in both my life and career. I can’t imagine not having done it. It was so incredibly profound. Before attending, I knew it was going to valuable, but I didn’t realise the sheer depth of knowledge and impact it would have."
"It’s a moment that helps you start looking at your career, your industry and at your professional development differently. It’s like reframing yourself." Maarten Kerbert on how the Transition to General Management programme helps give you different perspectives.
Listing your corporate values is not enough—companies need to wrestle with their cultures to make a difference, distinguishing them from their peers and updating them as they evolve.
Professor Charles Galunic – Professor of Organisational Behaviour, The Aviva Chaired Professor of Leadership and Responsibility, Co-Director of the Transition to General Management programme – reveals some of his latest research findings about networking, organisational culture, values... and value.
