Research and teaching to address critical issues for international leaders during the financial crisis and beyond

INSEAD, the leading international business school, has established a Leadership Initiative which brings together research and teaching on pressing issues facing international leaders. The Leadership Initiative supports the school’s mission to develop responsible, thoughtful leaders and entrepreneurs who create value for their organisations and their communities. INSEAD will also continue to host its annual Leadership Summits which draw hundreds of global leaders to the school’s Europe and Asia campuses each year.

The Initiative’s scope is multi-dimensional and encompasses the following areas of leadership research: clinical, identity, teams, change, society and diversity. Highlighting the human aspect of the current market crisis, INSEAD professors will also address the leadership dynamics that contributed to the meltdown in the financial industry and how leaders can respond during this critical juncture. Videos of INSEAD faculty discussing issues related to the crisis are featured on the Initiative’s Web site. Click here.

‘Organisations need to be on high alert when it comes to addressing leadership issues, especially during the current economic downturn,’ said J. Frank Brown, Dean of INSEAD. ‘Our Leadership Initiative is designed to place a long-term spotlight on the timeliest topics for global leaders in business and beyond.’

Underscoring the school’s international roots, the research and teaching takes a dynamic and global view of leadership. ‘At INSEAD, we have a unique vantage point for studying what aspects of leadership vary around the globe and what aspects are universal. The current crisis sets up a natural experiment for sorting out fads from fundamentals of human behaviour,’ says Herminia Ibarra, Faculty Director for the Initiative.

Examples of other areas in which faculty working with INSEAD’s Leadership Initiative will focus on include the following:

  • Distributed leadership
  • Managing collective emotions
  • Women leaders
  • Leadership learning methods
  • Leading executive teams for strategic renewal and change
  • Driving innovation during times of crisis
  • CEOs and sustainable performance
  • Cross-border leadership

‘As a top international business school, we have the responsibility to encourage a productive discussion about leadership between organisations, the academic world and ultimately individuals,’ said Cristina Escallon, Director of the INSEAD Leadership Initiative. ‘Our diverse faculty members can shed light on the human dimension of the crisis, focusing on leadership as a solution – and a shared responsibility.’
