Biography
Martin Gargiulo earned his PhD in Sociology from Columbia University and holds a degree in Cultural Anthropology from the Universidad de la República (Uruguay).
He teaches MBA and executive audiences across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Latin America. His executive education focuses on organizational design, informal networks, leadership, influence without authority, and change management, with a particular emphasis on the development of high-potential executives. He is the founder and director of INSEAD’s High Impact Leadership Programme and has led numerous customized programs for multinational firms across industries, with a particular focus on the energy sector.
Professor Gargiulo’s research examines the formation of social networks and their effects on performance in organizations. His work has been published in leading journals, including American Journal of Sociology, Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, and Academy of Management Journal. His recent research focuses on how professionals transition from early-career survival networks to networks that enable long-term success, and on the role of common third parties in the development of trust in new relationships. He has also developed the Social Capital Questionnaire, a widely used online assessment of executives’ informal networks and an online simulation used to teach influence and networking to MBA and executive participants.
He has also been actively involved in the INSEAD doctoral program, where he has taught an advanced seminar in social network analysis and supervised students who now hold faculty positions in the United States, Europe, and Asia. In recognition of his sustained contributions, he received a special award for outstanding service to the PhD program in 2022.
Professor Gargiulo has served as Area Chair (2006–2009) and Associate Dean for Executive Education for the Asia-Pacific region (2009–2011). He was an elected member of the Executive Committee of the Organization and Management Theory Division of the Academy of Management (2009–2012) and currently serves on the Editorial Board and Methods Advisory Panel of Administrative Science Quarterly.
