Biography
Matthew Bishop is a renowned writer, speaker, moderator, convener and
advisor. He is the author of several influential books, an award-winning journalist and cofounder of four high-impact social innovations. An Oxford-educated economist, executive and advisor, Bishop brings deep expertise in social innovation, impact investing, purpose-driven business and philanthropy, as well as international media, disruptive economic ideas and technology.
Now a columnist at The Observer, Bishop was a writer and editor at The Economist for over 25 years, including a decade as the magazine’s New York Bureau Chief, where he helped launch and host some of the magazine’s first podcasts and curated several conferences. In 2018, he joined Rockefeller Foundation to lead the Bellagio Center on Lake Como, Italy, focused on tackling some of the world’s biggest challenges.
Bishop's book, Philanthrocapitalism: How Giving Can Save the World, written with Michael Green, was described as a "definitive guide to a new generation of philanthropists who understand innovation and risk-taking, and who will play a crucial part in solving the biggest problems facing the world", by former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg. Bishop was also official author of the G7 Taskforce of Social Impact Investing report, "The Invisible Heart of Markets".
Bishop co-founded the Social Progress Index, an increasingly influential new measure of how well a society serves its citizens; #GivingTuesday, the global generosity movement, which harnesses social media to celebrate giving and drive charity that is more effective, now in over 50 countries and raising billions of dollars so far; 17 Rooms, a Brookings-Rockefeller Foundation backed expert platform to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals; and Catalyst 2030 (since renamed Catalyst Now), a global movement of social entrepreneurs focused on systemic change.
