INSEAD professors recognised among world’s best thought leaders in management and innovation
INSEAD, the leading international business school, announced that Professor Herminia Ibarra has won the 2013 Thinkers50 Leadership Award. In addition, Professor Ibarra was joined by Professors W Chan Kim, Renee Mauborgne and Morten Hansen in being named to the biennial Thinkers50 list – the definitive global ranking of thought leaders in management and innovation.
Professors Kim and Mauborgne were jointly-placed second overall, while Professor Ibarra was ranked at number nine and Professor Hansen at number twenty eight on the list of the business world’s top 50 thinkers. The achievement is representative of the school’s growing global presence.
Recently-appointed Dean of INSEAD, Ilian Mihov, said: “We are extremely proud to have four of our faculty recognised by the Thinkers50. The awards and rankings feature some of the world’s best thinkers, who are reshaping businesses and societies on an international scale – reflecting our own commitment at INSEAD to producing exemplary global talent through a vibrant and challenging intellectual environment.”
Professors Kim and Mauborgne, who also earned the number two spot in 2011, are INSEAD professors of strategy and management and co-directors of the INSEAD Blue Ocean Strategy Institute. They are authors of the best-selling Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make the Competition Irrelevant, which highlights how companies can create uncontested market space through value innovation. Blue Ocean Strategy has sold over two million copies and has been embraced by companies, not-for-profits and national governments around the world.
Professor Ibarra is the Cora Chaired Professor of Leadership and Learning, Professor of Organisational Behaviour and Area Chair for the Organisational Behaviour Department at INSEAD. She also appeared on the 2011 Thinkers50 list and is a member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Councils and the Visiting Committee of Harvard Business School. Her research and teaching focuses on professional and leadership development, women’s careers and career transition.
Professor Hansen is a Professor of Entrepreneurship at INSEAD and the co-author ofGreat by Choice (with Jim Collins, 2011), which was shortlisted for the 2013 Thinkers50 Best Book Award. He is also author of Collaboration (2009), and a management professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to teaching, Professor Hansen spent a number of years as a management consultant with the Boston Consulting Group.
Dubbed the ‘Oscars’ of the management world and launched in 2001, the Thinkers50 rankings shortlist for 2013 featured some 70 thinkers, from which the final Thinkers50 rankings and award winners were selected. Candidates were identified and scrutinised through a combination of open polling on the Thinkers50 Website and input from an international team of advisers based on 10 criteria, including originality and practicality of ideas, international outlook, ability to inspire and presentation style.
In addition, a further four INSEAD professors have been listed in the Thinkers50 ‘On the Radar’ ranking, which identifies fresh and influential global thought leaders, including:
- Laurence Capron – Professor of Strategy, the Paul Desmarais Chaired Professor of Partnership and Active Ownership and founder and director of INSEAD Executive Education’s M&As and Corporate Strategy programme;
