INSEAD Professor elected President of M&SOM Society, wins Responsible Research Award

Appointment and award exemplify global movement towards responsible research in business.

INSEAD, the business school for the world, today announces that Atalay Atasu, The Bianca and James Pitt Chair in Environmental Sustainability at INSEAD and Professor of Technology and Operations Management, has been elected as the President of the Manufacturing and Service Operations Management (M&SOM) Society. He also won the M&SOM Society Award for Responsible Research in Operations Management.

The Presidency of the MSOM Society is a prestigious position that will bring visibility to the individual and INSEAD. This role is for two years and happens in two stages; President Elect for the first year and Acting President for the second. Prior to this role, Atasu was the MSOM Society Special Interest Group (SIG) Chair for Sustainable Operations. INSEAD will assist and support Atasu in this new position.

INSEAD Dean of Research, Ziv Carmon says, “Atasu’s prestigious election to the presidency of the MSOM Society and this award reinforce the outstanding reputation our faculty have in producing excellent, rigorous and relevant research as well as INSEAD’s closeness to the business community. The M&SOM award – co-Sponsored by the Community for Responsible Research in Business and Management (RRBM) and the M&SOM Society – is awarded for studies that produce both credible (reliability, validity or trustworthiness) and societally useful knowledge (relevance to inform policies and practices with positive societal impact). The winning submission, “Truthful Mechanisms for Medical Surplus Product Allocation”, by Atasu, Can Zhang (Duke), L. Beril Toktay and Turgay Ayer (Georgia Institute of Technology), lays out a new approach that Medical Surplus Recovery Organisations (MSROs) can use when allocating supplies. Atasu’s study proposes a mechanism design approach that will help MSROs collect recipient’s needs and determine which recipient to serve at each shipping opportunity. This has led to a change in the daily operations of MedShare – an award-winning MSRO.

Atasu says: “I thoroughly enjoyed working on this project due to its humanitarian nature. Being able to help a nonprofit organisation such as Medshare, and seeing how the business acumen developed over decades can be useful at the interface of business and the society at large, has been a turning point in my career, and more than inspiring. I hope to do more of the same in the near future.

Katell Le Goulven, executive director of the Hoffmann Global Institute for Business and Society, adds, “Once again, our faculty demonstrate excellence in research that contributes to societal progress. As we work to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into INSEADs daily operations, it is research like this that will help others do the same - tackling difficult healthcare management issues and reducing inequalities around the globe.”

Atasu obtained a Ph.D. in Management from INSEAD in 2007. He went on to teach at the Georgia Institute of Technology Scheller School of Business, where he is Dunn Family Professor, Professor of Operations Management.
