INSEAD, the business school for the world, today announced that its faculty have performed exceptionally by receiving prestigious awards and commendations in The Case Centre Awards and Competitions 2018, which honours and celebrates worldwide excellence in case writing and teaching.

Seven professors and four INSEAD cases have been conferred a total of three category and two competitions awards.

“Congratulations to the INSEAD faculty and research staff who have achieved great success and recognition for their excellence in case writing and teaching,” says Ziv Carmon, Dean of Research and The Alfred H. Heineken Chaired Professor of Marketing, “Our accomplishment this year is testament of INSEAD’s thought leadership and the high calibre of its research output. It reaffirms the school’s commitment to research excellence that is both rigorous and relevant for global business practitioners.”

Case Centre Category Award Winners (awarded based on the increase in the number of schools adopting the case):

  • “Human Resource Management/Organisational Behaviour” category

Tony Hsieh at Zappos: Structure, Culture and Radical Change

Gianpiero Petriglieri, Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour, INSEAD
Noah Askin, Assistant Professor of Organisational Behaviour, INSEAD

Professor Petriglieri and Professor Askin note that, “2018 is the 19th time INSEAD has won this category award – and this is only possible due to the school’s dedication to humanising global business, a principle on which many of our activities rest.” They add, “Good cases are meant to generate healthy, multi-sided debate amongst students, and this is certainly one of them. The blending of the personal and the professional in Tony’s leadership of Zappos brings out strong feelings among MBA students and executives and really make for a great case discussion.”

AccorHotels and the Digital Transformation

David Dubois, Associate Professor of Marketing, INSEAD
Joerg Niessing, Affiliate Professor of Marketing, INSEAD
Jean Wee, Research Associate, INSEAD

Professor Dubois comments that, “Our case works very well in the classroom because it involves a relevant business challenge in today’s agile world that both speaks well to the audience and is at the heart of the company’s digital transformation.” Professor Niessing adds an interesting observation that, “Students aren’t only surprised that is spending more than Accor, but also by the magnitude of differences: with such a big gap in spending, what should Accor’s reaction be? It prompts them to follow alternative routes.”

Tesla Motors: Disrupting the Auto Industry?

Nathan Furr, Assistant Professor of Strategy, INSEAD

Professor Furr states that, ““My favourite part of the case is the discussion about whether Tesla is a car company (i.e. product), a battery/energy company (i.e. component), or a system (i.e. ecosystem of product, service, repair, charging and upgrades). This discussion really opens students’ minds.

Case Centre Competitions Winners (awarded by a panel of internationally renowned case method experts):

Pierre Chandon, Professor of Marketing at INSEAD and The L'Oréal Chaired Professor of Marketing - Innovation and Creativity

Professor Chandon says that, “Since the very first case which I had produced during my PhD studies, I’ve always considered case writing and case teaching as an essential part of my job. Receiving this Outstanding Case Teacher competition award means a great deal to me, especially after having received the Outstanding Contribution to the Case Method Award two years ago. I am thankful to INSEAD for allowing me to pursue both academic research and case writing and teaching.”
