The programme strengthened my financial acumen and added meaningful depth to my leadership capabilities.
Rutger Rozendaal’s career has taken him across disciplines, industries and continents. From engineering to consulting at Boston Consulting Group, to senior leadership roles at Unilever, and now as CEO of The Vegetarian Butcher, his journey reflects both breadth and ambition.
Today, he leads one of the fastest-growing plant-based brands in the world, with a presence in more than 55 markets across retail and foodservice. Following its 2025 integration with Vivera, the business has entered a new phase as part of The Vegetarian Butcher Collective, positioning itself as one of Europe’s leading plant-based meat companies.
At this level, leadership is no longer just about growth. It is about making the right decisions to sustain that growth at scale.
To further strengthen this capability, Rutger completed the Finance for Executives programme, which contributed towards his successful completion of INSEAD’s Certificate in Global Management (CGM).
Leading Growth in a Fast-Evolving Industry
As CEO, Rutger is responsible for steering global strategy, scaling the business, and advancing its mission to accelerate the protein transition.
“In my role, I focus on driving the company’s global strategy, growth and impact,” he explains.
Operating in a rapidly evolving industry, this involves navigating complex decisions across markets, investments and partnerships. With increasing scale comes increasing responsibility to ensure that these decisions are grounded not just in ambition, but in sound financial judgement.
“I wanted to further deepen and refresh my perspective on the financial aspects that drive business performance, while also engaging in meaningful conversations with peers in this space,” Rutger shares.
A Deliberate Step to Strengthen Financial Acumen
Rutger came to INSEAD through strong recommendations and the positive experiences of others. He approached the programme with clear expectations.
“I began with high expectations for practical financial insight,” he says. “And the programme fully met those expectations.”
Rather than starting from zero, the experience allowed him to build on his existing knowledge and sharpen it in a way that is directly relevant to his role.
Making Finance Practical and Actionable
What stood out most to Rutger was the programme’s ability to translate complex financial concepts into practical tools.
“I especially valued the interactive sessions that made complex financial concepts practical and engaging,” he reflects.
This hands-on approach enabled him to not only understand financial frameworks, but to apply them in real-world contexts. The interactive nature of the sessions, combined with peer discussions, brought clarity and depth to the learning experience.
Professor Pascal Maenhout, in particular, left a strong impression.
“He was truly inspiring and engaging, bringing clarity to even the most complex financial concepts,” Rutger shares.
Learning Across INSEAD’s Global Campuses
Rutger’s experience spanned two of INSEAD’s campuses, offering a truly global learning environment.
“I took the programme in Fontainebleau and Abu Dhabi, and I enjoyed both campuses,” he says.
From the historic setting of Fontainebleau to the dynamic context of Abu Dhabi, each location brought a different perspective to the learning experience. Together, they reflect INSEAD’s global approach to executive education, exposing participants to diverse business environments and ways of thinking.
Beyond the classroom, the diversity of the cohort added another dimension.
“My course mates were diverse and engaging, and the connections made have supported me both personally and professionally.”
Strengthening Leadership Through Financial Depth
The impact of the programme has been both immediate and lasting.
“It strengthened my financial acumen and added meaningful depth to my leadership capabilities,” Rutger notes.
For a CEO operating in a high-growth, purpose-driven business, this added depth is critical. It enhances his ability to evaluate opportunities, engage in strategic discussions, and guide the company through its next phase of growth.
A Commitment to Lifelong Learning
Despite his extensive experience, Rutger sees learning as an ongoing journey.
“I believe lifelong learning is essential for staying relevant and growing as a leader,” he reflects.
This mindset continues to shape how he approaches both his role and his development, ensuring he remains adaptable in an ever-changing business landscape.
