Value Creation for Owners and Directors

Bringing structure and fairness to value creation at board level

Michel Tournier

Technology and Cyber Security Operating Partner

Value creation does not sit in the same place for all stakeholders, and Fairness Leadership is the only approach which better ensures sustainability and value preservation.

1) What inspired you to join this programme, and what did you hope to achieve?

Having held a Tech and Cyber Operating Partner position in a family office for the last 7 years, I had a good understanding of the criticality of value creation. Nevertheless, the Value Creation for Owners and Directors programme inspired me because, after having experienced and learned in real life, I wanted to get the academic view and a more holistic knowledge. My goal being to integrate the best way to bring value to owners or directors, where they expect it, leveraging Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Cyber resilience.

2) In what ways has the programme shifted your perspective or influenced your approach to work?

The programme gave me a much better understanding of the criticality of owners’ and directors’ governance, but also what needs to be architected at board level in order to avoid bias and conflicts of interest, to ensure value preservation throughout time.

3) Which aspects of the experience stood out most for you (faculty, peers, content, format)?

I definitely would say the whole experience has been enriching. Highly knowledgeable professors, having the ability to perfectly manage the content and adapt it to the diversity of participants, with excellent teaching methods and the right amount of humour to keep the audience captivated. Of course, all the group or one-to-one discussions, drinks and dinners, official or non-official, were extraordinary sources of real-life experience feedback.

4) Can you describe a moment or insight that particularly resonated with you?

The insights that particularly seized me are the following. It all starts with the mission elaborated by owners. Value creation does not sit in the same place for all stakeholders, and Fairness Leadership is the only approach which better ensures sustainability and value preservation.

5) Would you recommend this programme to others?

If so, what makes it meaningful to you? I can’t recommend the programme enough to others, to better understand the criticality of governance, rules and policies that owners or directors must apply to themselves. I myself feel much more equipped to engage with family offices, private equity firms and potentially sit on company boards. Also, the overall organisation of the week was impressive and the INSEAD team very engaged in making the programme worthwhile for all participants.
