Biography
Emeka Emuwa is a distinguished banker and non executive director with a career of over 30 years leading and transforming banking institutions across Africa.
He is the Chairman of Tangerine Financial (U.K.), the holding company for Tangerine Africa’s financial services business currently comprising Insurance, Pension Fund Administration and Asset Management.
As Independent Director of Africa Finance Corporation, a multilateral finance institution with over $10 billion invested in infrastructure, Mr Emuwa chairs the Board Risk and Investment Committee and is a member of the Board Nominations and Governance Committee.
In his previous executive role, Emeka was the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Union Bank of Nigeria, where he successfully led the bank’s transformation following a $500 million recapitalisation by an international consortium of private equity investors. He was also chair of Union Bank UK, the U.K. subsidiary of the bank.
Mr Emuwa joined Union Bank, after a stellar 25-year career with Citibank where he was Country Officer and Managing Director of Citibank in Nigeria - the first Nigerian to be appointed to the position - following several country and regional head roles across Anglophone and Francophone Africa.
An experienced non-executive director, he is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors (U.K.) and a Fellow of the Institute of Bankers (Nigeria). He was recognised as Bank CEO of the Year by Businessday (Nigeria) and Vanguard (Nigeria). He is also a Certified mediator.
Mr. Emuwa holds an MSc in Management (Finance) from Purdue University’s Krannert School of Management. He graduated from the University of Lagos with a BSc degree in Finance.
Outside of his professional career, he is deeply committed to causes affecting the underprivileged and children with disabilities.
