Traditionally, the NAA had two main chapters: Zurich and Geneva. Recognising the potential for a vibrant community in Lausanne, Vivek took the initiative to establish a new chapter. Despite initial challenges of gaining critical mass and overcoming logistical hurdles, the Lausanne chapter now boasts over 150 active members, a testament to Vivek's leadership and commitment to fostering the INSEAD community.
Reflecting on his time at INSEAD, Vivek highlights the unique dual-campus experience, contrasting the ultramodern Singapore campus with the historic Fontainebleau setting nestled between the forest and the chateau. This diverse environment, combined with INSEAD's policy limiting any one nationality to 10% of the class, fostered rich intercultural interactions. Vivek vividly remembers the quality of the faculty and the deep classroom discussions, enriched by his classmates' varied perspectives. These impactful interactions, with memorable insights from professors like Michael Brim, stayed with him even 20 years later.
Vivek’s career trajectory post-INSEAD is marked by significant transitions, all of which he credits to the preparation he received at the institution. Initially working in the alcohol/ beverage industry, Vivek transitioned to a global role with Nestlé, one of the world’s largest food and beverage companies. This broadened his focus to include R&D, innovation and new business creation.
Vivek’s venture into sustainability began with his role in venture capital, where he is now focused on de-fossilisation—reducing reliance on fossil fuels in various industries. His VC fund, which he has co-founded together with his INSEAD classmate, emphasises sustainability in materials in areas such as agriculture, food, packaging, and textiles. "What we support is the transition to bio-based products and the reduced use of chemicals," he explains, highlighting his commitment to environmental stewardship. His fund's approach aligns with the broader Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework, aiming for sustainable and ethical practices across industries.
Vivek's enduring connection to INSEAD is evident not only in his professional life but also in his personal life. His entire family, including his wife and daughter, are part of the INSEAD community, underscoring the school's personal and professional significance in their lives and illustrating the lifelong bond alumni share with the school.
To new graduates, Vivek advises, "keep an open mind" and recognise that learning is a continuous journey. He stresses the importance of staying connected to INSEAD, leveraging the network, and contributing to the community. Vivek’s commitment to INSEAD and sustainability reflects a broader vision of creating a positive impact, both within the alumni network and in the wider world.
