From INSEAD to AI: Raúl García Monclús MBA’99D’s Journey and the Transformative Power of AI

Raúl García Monclús MBA’99D had a well-established robust career as a software developer in the UK before deciding to come to INSEAD in 1999. Raul was attracted to INSEAD because of its top-tier reputation and his passion for international experiences. Reflecting on his time at INSEAD, Raúl recalls the eye-opening first week, where he encountered classmates from diverse backgrounds and experiences. This diversity highlighted the exceptional quality of the student body and left a lasting impression on him.

Raúl’s connection with INSEAD goes far beyond academics. He actively participates in reunions, maintains strong bonds with his classmates through regular meetups, and stays in touch via a lively WhatsApp group. His commitment to the INSEAD community is further evident in his active role within the Alumni Association in Spain, where he fosters relationships and nurtures lifelong friendships with alumni.

A significant chapter of Raúl’s professional journey is his deep involvement in AI and machine learning for over two decades. His expertise sheds light on the evolution and profound impact of these technologies. Raúl emphasises that while AI and machine learning have always held immense potential, early business applications were hampered by poor data quality and slow technological advancements. However, the past decade has witnessed remarkable progress, particularly with the advent of deep learning and generative AI, accelerating the integration of AI into business processes.

Raúl advises current students and young alumni to grasp the fundamentals of AI and machine learning. He encourages them to explore AI's capabilities and limitations, viewing it as a transformative force set to reshape organizational workflows and processes. Drawing parallels between the AI revolution and the dot-com boom of the early 2000s – especially how the arrival of the internet had negligible impact in the short term but transformed the world in just 10 years. Raúl predicts that while some jobs may be automated, many will evolve, enhancing productivity and redefining the nature of work.

Raúl also discusses the broader implications of AI on the workforce, suggesting that repetitive, process-based jobs are likely to be significantly reduced or automated. Nonetheless, he believes that creative roles will retain their value due to the nuanced and subjective nature of creativity, even as they are augmented by AI.

Looking ahead, Raúl envisions a balanced life where professional pursuits coexist harmoniously with personal well-being and altruism. Inspired by an INSEAD seminar on Thriving to 100, he aims to dedicate more time to his family, personal interests, and supporting others in their professional journeys.

In Raúl’s words, AI is not just a powerful tool but a revolutionary one that will change the way we work, consume services, and compete in the market. His journey exemplifies a lifelong commitment to learning, community, and leveraging technology for the greater good.
