INSEAD expands its Asia Campus with premier global leadership development centre

The school creates unparalleled business innovation hub for Asia and the world

INSEAD, the leading international business school, today announced the next step in its ongoing commitment to meet the urgent demand for management education in Asia with the addition of its Leadership Development Centre on the school’s Asia campus in Singapore.  The Centre will create a premier business innovation hub in Asia and greatly expand INSEAD’s presence in the region by offering a deeper and broader range of management programmes, both degree and non-degree. INSEAD will partner with top global companies seeking to establish professional development centres for their employees in Asia.

“We are committed to the region and to playing a key role as a partner in its future. INSEAD is building on its success in Singapore and now looks to be the principal voice on business management and leadership in Asia,” said Dipak C. Jain, Dean of INSEAD. “Our thought leaders are exceptionally positioned to address the global challenges faced by senior executives, government organisations and corporations. We thank the Singapore Government for its permanent support which will enable INSEAD to continue to create an innovation hub to transform Asia and the world.”

INSEAD was the first Western school to adopt a multi-campus model with the establishment of a fully developed Asian campus.  The first INSEAD Singapore M.B.A. class in 2000 included 53 students from 26 countries.  Today, the Asia Campus boasts 400 M.B.A. students from more than 50 countries, 50 faculty, 47 participants in the first Asia Section of the Global Executive M.B.A. and 2,500 executive education participants.  The new Leadership Development Centre will extend INSEAD’s current executive education programmes in Asia, with an emphasis on the Advanced Management Programme and Leadership. It will also expand the Executive M.B.A. and Master of Finance programmes as well as spur development of new specialised degree offerings.

The new Leadership Centre marks “Phase Three” in the school’s expansion and will increase significantly the numbers of students, executives and faculty on-site as INSEAD continues to bring together the world’s top scholars and practitioners.
“The Centre will serve as a catalyst for INSEAD to re-define global management education for executives from around the world by combining research and teaching excellence with an unparalleled learning environment,” said Ilian Mihov, Dean of Faculty and Research and Professor of Economics.  “This bold initiative will support our efforts to attract more world-class talent to the region, add to our prestigious faculty roster and further extend INSEAD’s global network and ability to create a positive impact for an array of organisations worldwide.”

INSEAD will construct the six-storey, 10,000m² Leadership Development Centre directly north of its existing campus in Singapore.  The estimated cost of this major innovation will be SGD$50 million, with a minimum of SGD$20 million sought from external sources.  The Asia Campus was first built in 2000 and extended in 2005 to accommodate increasing market demand for INSEAD scholarship and teaching.  The current campus occupies 1.5 hectares in the Buona Vista district, Singapore's "Knowledge Hub,” and  has more than 19,000m² of amphitheatres with a total seating capacity of 950, working spaces, library, offices, restaurant, bar, fitness centre and executive residential space.

To celebrate the expansion of INSEAD in Asia, an event has been hosted at its Asia campus in Singapore on 8 November to support the announcement of INSEAD Premier Global Leadership Development Centre: Alumni, Professors as well as Business and Government leaders convened to plan for the future investment in Asia. Joanne Shoveller, Associate Dean, stated: "With more than 50 years of building a worldwide network of alumni, corporates/businesses and governments, INSEAD's expansion demonstrates its confidence in contributing to 21st century global business.  The new Leadership Development Centre will provide government agencies, foundations, alumni, philanthropists and business leaders with an extraordinary public opportunity to support INSEAD’s future.”

INSEAD’s long commitment in Asia, where it has set new standards for management knowledge and practice, is just one illustration of the school’s global success:

  • In 1973, INSEAD offers its first programme on Asian business as a company specific management development course.
  • In 1980, INSEAD’s Euro-Asia Centre opens on its Europe campus in Fontainebleau, France.
  • In 2000 (Phase 1), INSEAD innovates the ‘one school, multiple campuses’ concept by establishing its second campus in Singapore, with 53 students from 26 countries.
  • In 2005 (Phase 2), INSEAD’s Asia campus expands and adds over 6000 m².
  • In 2006, INSEAD launches a joint EMBA programme with TSINGHUA in China.
  • In 2010, INSEAD’s Asia campus marks its 10th anniversary.
  • In August 2012, INSEAD launches its Global Executive MBA (GEMBA) class in Asia, which exceeded the number of admissions by 40 per cent, testifying to the increased demand for executive training in Asia.
  • In November 2012 (Phase 3), INSEAD will significantly expand its campus in Asia by over 10,000m² creating a global Leadership Development Centre of 30,000 m²; increasing its capacity by 50 per cent.
  • In April 2013, INSEAD will launch a specialised Master in Finance degree in Singapore.
