Microsoft is committed to environmental sustainability and environmental sensing, and one of its many initiatives is Microsoft Premonition, whose platform strategy and business development is led by Siddhartha Chaturvedi. Conceptualized and executed with an eye toward the 'Blue Ocean Strategy,' Microsoft Premonition eschews competition in the crowded carbon accounting marketplace to create an uncontested domain: predictive real-time ecological monitoring.
Microsoft Premonition is a state-of-the-art platform that aims to identify, track, sample, and forecast key species and biological threats in the environment combining abiotic, biological and geospatial data. It uses robotic sensing platforms, artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, and cloud-scale metagenomics to autonomously monitor disease-carrying animals such as mosquitoes, robotically collect environmental samples, and then genomically scan them for pathogens. Microsoft Premonition is designed to help prevent diseases, maintain food security, and protect ecosystems by providing new tools to monitor the millions of hidden species in the environment. Microsoft Premonition is currently available to select partners as part of an Early Access Program and has been deployed in multiple countries across four continents. Microsoft Premonition is an example of how Microsoft is using technology to create a positive impact on the world. Microsoft Premonition also won the Fast Company’s 2021 World Changing Ideas Award for its innovative approach to detecting and preventing pandemics before they start. This award recognizes projects that offer creative solutions to global challenges and have the potential to change society for the better.
