FAQs

ChangeMasters Middle East

What was it and what did it set out to achieve?

ChangeMasters Middle East was an INSEAD R&D project directed by Professor Albert Angehrn. Its goal was to adapt the now well-established EIS simulation to the specifics of the Middle East context.

Output is now: the GulfCom simulation.

Who was the INSEAD researcher on this project?

The INSEAD researcher on this project was Dr. Florian Schloderer, an INSEAD Research Fellow working out of the INSEAD Abu Dhabi Centre.

Is it an INSEAD Fontainebleau or Abu Dhabi Centre project?

It's both. See the short description of ChangeMasters Middle East on the research page of the Centre for Executive Education and Research in Abu Dhabi.

What is the formal R&D project abstract? And the title and keywords?

Title

"Developing a Simulation-based Learning Experience for Change and Innovation Management Competences in Middle Eastern Organizations"

Abstract

For organizations in the Middle East it has become increasingly important to successfully face the challenges of change and innovation management. However, to date, no learning solution exists for the systematic development of critical management competencies for change and innovation. Our present research proposal thus proposes to develop a simulation-based learning experience targeting key change and innovation competences within a Middle Eastern organizational context, especially addressing the United Arab Emirates and other member countries of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (CCASG). This simulation is intended to target management courses in business schools starting of course with our INSEAD programs in Abu Dhabi and Fontainebleau, and Singapore, then progressively extending the simulation to other educational institutions as well as organizations in the Middle East facing the challenges of change and innovation management. In sum, we are proposing a unique learning solution that may serve to enhance the attractiveness of INSEAD and its educational offering, and at the same time contribute to the professionalization of management development in the region.

What is the specific work plan of the ChangeMasters Middle East project?

ChangeMasters Middle East is, in fact, a two-phase project, with three distinct work packages:

  • Phase 1:

The project begins with knowledge harvesting related to change and innovation management in Middle East organizations (work package 1);

  • Phase 2:

The phase 2 of the project consists of the simulation design (work package 2) and the prototyping cycle (work package 3).

How long will the project last?

End date was April 2009. -- Now successfully completed.

Is the new GulfCom simulation to be in Arabic also?

For the moment plans are only to have it in English.

In what courses will it be proposed at INSEAD?

The forthcoming ChangeMasters Middle East simulation will indeed serve to enrich our INSEAD curriculum and particularly, the INSEAD Executive Education offering.

What's been done so far in terms of workshops, and what's being planned?

One workshop has taken place already in August 2008 on the INSEAD Abu Dhabi campus, and another workshop is now in the planning stage.

Are there specific research links to be cited?

Yes.

  • There is all of the research that went into the INSEAD/CALT/EC project of the same name: ChangeMasters.
  • There is also the EIS simulation on which the upcoming simulation will be based.
  • And finally, there is the first example of a completed and now largely deployed cultural adaptation and translation, that is: the LingHe simulation, adapted to the Chinese context.
