One of the most powerful lessons for me was around courage: having the confidence to pause or say no in high-pressure situations when something doesn’t feel right, especially when the long-term interests of the business, shareholders, and stakeholders are at stake.
What inspired you to join this programme, and what did you hope to achieve?
After more than 20 years working across different industries in senior executive roles, I felt it was time to take a deeper look at Board Directorship. I’ve worked with many boards over the years and thought I understood how they operated. But I kept coming back to one question: what does great really look like in a boardroom? I realised that while I had a variety of experiences, I didn’t have a structured framework to assess board effectiveness or my own readiness to contribute at that level. I joined the programme to gain clarity, challenge my assumptions, and build the confidence to step into future board roles with purpose and impact.
In what ways has the programme shifted your perspective or influenced your approach to work?
The shift in my perspective has been significant. I now have a much deeper appreciation for how complex and demanding board roles truly are — they require fast, informed decisions, a high level of accountability, and the ability to navigate political and interpersonal dynamics. One of the most powerful lessons for me was around courage: having the confidence to pause or say no in high-pressure situations when something doesn’t feel right, especially when the long-term interests of the business, shareholders, and stakeholders are at stake. What stood out is that these decisions are made from a position removed from day-to-day operations, often with limited time and information. That can mean making tough calls — even turning down time-sensitive opportunities — in order to uphold governance and protect the organisation’s long-term value. I feel far better equipped to support the boards I’ll work with in the future and will approach challenges with greater clarity, confidence, and resilience.
Which aspects of the experience stood out most for you (faculty, peers, content, format)?
This was my first time at INSEAD, and I was genuinely impressed by how well the programme was designed and delivered. From the pre-course materials and peer introductions to the structure of the sessions themselves, everything was thoughtfully curated. The faculty were outstanding — not just knowledgeable, but also deeply engaging. What really stood out was how experiential and reflective the learning was. It wasn’t just about absorbing content; it was about applying it, discussing it, and understanding how it connects to your own leadership style. The diversity of perspectives among peers added so much richness, and the environment encouraged honest, open dialogue. It was a truly immersive experience.
Can you describe a moment or insight that particularly resonated with you?
There were many, but two insights really stayed with me. First, the idea that one size doesn’t fit all — there are different types of boards, and it’s important to understand where your skills, experience, and passion align. That helped me reflect on where I could add the most value and where I’d feel most fulfilled. Second, the level of accountability board directors carry — not just legally or financially, but ethically and personally. That responsibility is significant, and this programme helped me see how essential it is to be prepared, informed, and grounded in your values.
Would you recommend this programme to others? If so, what makes it meaningful to you?
Absolutely. I would recommend this programme to anyone who works with boards or is considering stepping into a board role. It’s not just informative — it’s transformative. It challenges your thinking, stretches your perspective, and gives you the tools to lead with integrity and impact. You walk away with a clearer understanding of the role, a stronger sense of self, and a renewed confidence in your ability to contribute meaningfully. For me, it was an incredibly valuable experience — one I’ll carry with me into every boardroom I step into.
