Aspiring Directors Programme

Bridging leadership experience with a board director’s mindset

Lars Duwander

Sales Director - Head of Business Unit, Mediq Denmark

For anyone transitioning towards board work, the Aspiring Directors Programme gives you both the tools and the confidence to contribute effectively from day one. It has been one of the most rewarding learning experiences of my career.

What inspired you to join this programme, and what did you hope to achieve?

I joined the Aspiring Directors Programme because I wanted to prepare myself for the next step—moving from executive leadership into meaningful board work. I’ve spent many years leading commercial teams and driving results, but I wanted to better understand the board’s role in shaping purpose, governance and long-term value creation. My goal was to bridge my operational experience with a board director’s mindset—learning how to contribute to start-ups with commercial input and know-how.

In what ways has the programme shifted your perspective or influenced your approach to work?

It has completely changed the way I look at leadership and decision-making. I now think much more in terms of balance—how to challenge constructively, when to step back, and how to ensure alignment between management and the board. I’ve also become more conscious of the power of process and tone in a boardroom: how trust, transparency and structure enable better decisions. Not to mention the importance of a good, structured chair! The programme has made me a stronger, more reflective leader in my current role as well.

Which aspects of the experience stood out most for you (faculty, peers, content, format)?

The mix of theory, case work and peer dialogue was exceptional. The faculty brought governance to life in a way that was both academic and practical. But what really stood out were the discussions with fellow participants—leaders from all over the world, sharing their own experiences and challenges openly. That blend of insight and humility created a unique learning atmosphere where everyone contributed and learned from each other.

Can you describe a moment or insight that particularly resonated with you?

The VR boardroom simulation was a real highlight. Being placed inside a full board meeting—seeing how group dynamics, tone and subtle communication patterns influenced the discussion—was eye-opening. It was a vivid reminder that effective governance is as much about human behaviour as it is about technical skill or financial understanding. That experience truly brought the concept of “boardroom dynamics” to life in a way no lecture ever could.

Would you recommend this programme to others? If so, what makes it meaningful to you?

Without hesitation. The programme is much more than an academic course—it’s a personal reset. It challenges how you think, how you listen and how you create impact at the highest level. For anyone transitioning towards board work, the Aspiring Directors Programme gives you both the tools and the confidence to contribute effectively from day one. It has been one of the most rewarding learning experiences of my career.
