Overview

On 17 June 2023 at INSEAD Europe Campus, the Hoffmann Institute is hosting a Business and Society Summit to take stock of and celebrate 5 years of work on sustainability at INSEAD.

The Summit will review progress and explore trends to consider to further integrate social and environmental challenges in business education. Speakers will include INSEAD faculty, students, alumni as well as external experts and members of the Hoffmann Institute Advisory Board. The Summit will be held in conjunction with the INSEAD Force for Good Campaign Celebrations.

The Campaign Celebrations commemorate the joint success of The INSEAD Campaign: A Force for Good, which has achieved over €300 million in funds raised, at 50% alumni donor participation including a generous gift by André and Rosalie Hoffmann which founded the Hoffmann Global Institute for Business and Society. This extraordinary display of generosity and support from the INSEAD community will enable us to amplify our impact as a force for good by developing socially responsible global leaders able to tackle today’s challenges head on.

Session B: Transforming Health Systems and a Virtual Reality Experience

This session will focus on the work of INSEAD’s Healthcare Management Initiative (HMI) in two main areas of research and teaching that are linked to business and society. One main area is how business model innovations in nonhealth sectors can be used to rethink how health services are provided and how health technology innovators can rethink clinical trials. The second main area is to improve access and quality of health care services to underserved populations. We discuss collaborations with partners in the UK, the Netherlands, and we will wear virtual reality headsets to visit a clinic in Tanzania.

Session C: Social Impact – Shared Ownership implemented by Private Equity

When a successful exit by a private equity firm led to meaningful & life changing payouts for all workers (not just senior management) in a manufacturing company of 800 employees, we paid attention. Professor Zeisberger will show the power of broad equity ownership and thoughtful incentive structures using her latest case study on C.H.I. Overhead Doors, a KKR portfolio company in the US. The session will take a shot at the difficult topic of Social Justice and how to start reducing wealth disparity. Can micro adjustments to the engagement model at the company level, potentially translate into macro impact at the national level, by addressing inequality, productivity and even technology disruption? Panel: The future of sustainability reporting

The current debate on what constitutes sustainable economic behavior by corporates has prompted many firms to redefine or broaden their purpose, strategic objectives, performance evaluation metrics, and compensation schemes. Firms’ stakeholders, including regulators, policymakers, and capital providers increasingly demand (financial) information about the environmental and social externalities and impacts of firms’ economic activities. Our panel discussion will focus on how corporate reporting practices are evolving rapidly to capture not only traditional (financial) drivers of value creation in firms but also to reflect on the extent to which firms’ economic activities impact the environment and society in a sustainable way.
