Research Interests

Ideation is an adventure. Across sections and cultures, creators get on the train pursuing originality over conformity and fuel innovation with design thinking and aesthetic flare. However, tensions surface in ideators' and evaluators' diverse perceptions of idea potential. Aware of their audience and ecosystem, creators may find it costly to ignore the expectations imposed by judges and stakeholders. While on the other hand, one potential consequence is that they lose sight of novelty and change that may go beyond the norm. My research explores how people achieve and sustain creativity in a complex and dynamic environment. In dealing with the emerging tensions in creative dynamics, my research interests focus on two lines: 1) how creative ideas are generated and evaluated under tensions in the co-creation process, and 2) how tensions management in idea co-creation and presentation affect creativity outcomes and creators' careers. To answer these questions, I conducted empirical studies employing a mixed-method approach, taking the most advantage of archival data, interviews and surveys, as well as lab and field experiments.
