Several questions are addressed in this paper by the author. The first question is, to what extent is increasing human welfare attributable to science and technological progress rather than to economic growth? Second, to what extent is technological progress currently a driver of economic growth, and to what extend is the relationships the other way around? Third, does technological progress in some domains have a negative impact on economic growth? Fourth, to what extend does technological progress currently have a negative impact on employment? Fifth, and finally, what kind of technology is needed for a truly sustainable future? This last question turns out to be rather subtle but also rather crucial.
