Peter Goodson is a pioneer in the private equity discipline as an early stage partner at Clayton, Dubilier & Rice (CD&R). One of the first management buyout firms, CD&R has purchased and transformed performance at over 70 companies worth more than $100 billion over the last 40 years achieving a cumulative IRR of 53% since inception. The firm’s strategy is driven primarily by achieving enhanced value operationally. CD&R’s operating executives include executives like former CEO’s Jack Welch from GE and Sir Terry Leahy from Tesco. The firm also owns minority interests in Principle Capital in Shanghai and Kedaara in Mumbai.
Retired from PE business ownership, Peter is a Distinguished Teaching Fellow at the University of California at the Berkeley - Hass Business School. He was been awarded the Outstanding Teaching award by the students of the Berkeley Haas School of Business several times. He holds the position of Distinguished Fellow at INSEAD in its Global Private Equity Initiative and the Emerging Markets Institute sponsored by the Singaporean Government. He was also elected a fellow of Dartmouth’s Tuck Center for Private Equity and Entrepreneurship. He teaches M&A: Lessons in Value Creation, Turnarounds: Effective Leadership in Crisis and PE: Leadership in Creating Value and Emerging Market PE Value Creation. He has also taught or lectured at INSEAD, Tuck, NYU Stern, Wharton and Columbia.
Before joining CD&R, Professor Goodson was a Managing Director at Kidder, Peabody, where, at the age of 26, he founded the M&A Group in 1972. He continues to be one of the foremost experts in seller advantaged exits and has led close to 500 assignments.
An “adventurer with his own capital and endless curiosity”, he is presently assisting a number of emerging market private equity firms to develop operational capabilities to improve portfolio performance and investment returns. Peter created the Value Optimization Board for Mekong Capital in Vietnam (voted Frontier Market Firm of the Year 2014 and Operational Improvement Firm of the Year in 2013 by Private Equity International) and was appointed to the Tata Capital Growth PE Advisory Board in India.
