Industrial companies contribute ~40% of global emissions. Looking closer, emissions are highly concentrated, with ~200,000 factories contributing almost 20% of all emissions. These are the large steel, refining, cement, and chemicals plants that often use heat and chemical reactions to transform raw materials into the commodities that are used to make everything that we use on a daily basis.
The majority of these factories are old, and lack modern software. So, while they manage many operating controls using data, it is very basic, and lacks the optimization tooling that is common in high tech companies / applications. TC Labs brings modern technologies around data processing, analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to the factory environment. Our tools identify and take action on cost and carbon saving opportunities that wouldn’t have been visible with older technologies.
We focus on making optimizations regular, repeatable, and easily actionable. Our tools are used to identify anomalies like leaking valves or partial failures in heating elements, as well as opportunities to change control set-points to optimize them for materials, ambient conditions, or workload patterns. When combined over time, these individual optimizations reduce carbon emissions by anywhere from 10%-30%. Since the majority of the changes are reductions in fossil fuel inputs, they also save operating costs by a similar amount – which in these margin focused businesses, adds a meaningful bottom line impact. When considering the top 200k emitting factories, we have the opportunity to keep a meaningful amount of carbon from entering the atmosphere, and we can do it in the coming months or quarters vs. years from now.
