Meet our Entrepreneurs in Residence
Jennifer Azapian is an investor and advisor who works actively with founders and supports companies with business strategy, governance, leadership and HR planning as they scale and prepare for exit. She began her career as employee #10 at Virgin America has spent the last 15+ years working with startups, scaleups, and corporate innovation centers. Jennifer is currently a Venture Partner at Loyal VC and was previously a Partner at Mighty Capital. She holds a BA from Dartmouth College, an MBA (‘10J) from INSEAD, and Compensation Committee Certification from the Economic Research Institute.
Her investment focus has been B2B tech (Fintech/Martech/Applied AI/Enterprise Software).
Jean-Marc Frangos was in charge of BT Ventures and of Open Innovation for BT (British Telecom) in the Valley and managed technology and R&D Labs on a global scale. As a seasoned corporate venturing investor and a digital geek, he is particularly interested in 5G and its applications, AR/VR and immersive tech, Cloud and video, AI and the more recent Working-From-Home innovations.
Kamal Hassan is a founding partner of Loyal VC, the largest investor in INSEAD grads globally, with over 50 alumni companies backed to date. Prior to launching Loyal, Kamal spent 20 years as an entrepreneur, angel investor and designing and running an accelerator program. He has mentored over 500 entrepreneurs. Kamal has also worked at Bain & Co and as an engineering physicist, and has traveled to over 100 countries. Kamal enjoys advising entrepreneurs in all industries, especially those who combine profit with social or environmental impact. He is especially knowledgeable in the math and process of angel and VC investing/fundraising, and can provide generalist advice in other areas.
Elena is a product leader and startup advisor, who has extensive experience building and launching first generation consumer and enterprise software products for startups (C3.ai) and innovation teams within larger companies (Google X, Chegg, Nook, OXO). She is passionate about creating simple, intuitive products that solve customers' most pressing problems, disrupt industries, and hopefully change the world in the process. This passion has led her to work on AI and ML powered products that have served millions of users across utilities, higher education, smart cities, and the connected home space.
In addition to graduating from INSEAD’s MBA program in 2006, Elena also has a master’s in architecture from Harvard, and a bachelor’s from the University of Pennsylvania. In her free time, she advises startups, enjoys going on adventures with her two sons, and, in her role as Co-President of INSEAD's Women in Business club, organizes events that bring INSEAD's alumni together to exchange ideas, network, and discuss what they can do to accelerate gender equity in the workplace.
Alexandre (Alex) Lazarow has spent his career working at the intersection of investing, innovation, and economic development in the private, public, and social sectors. He is the author of Out-Innovate: How Global Entrepreneurs - from Delhi to Detroit - Are Rewriting the Rules of Silicon Valley (HBR Press). Alex is a venture capitalist with Cathay Innovation, a global firm that invests across Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. Previously, Alex worked with Omidyar Network, a philanthropic investment firm that has invested over a billion dollars in hundreds of startups around the world. He has served as a strategy consultant with McKinsey & Company, a financial regulator with the Bank of Canada, and an M&A investment banker with the Royal Bank of Canada.
Alex is an adjunct professor specializing in impact investment and entrepreneurship at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. He is a Kauffman Fellow, CFA Charterholder, and a Stephen M. Kellen Term Member at the Council on Foreign Relations. He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and a B.Comm from the University of Manitoba.
Alex is a regular columnist with Forbes, and his writing has been featured in the Financial Times, Harvard Business Review, McKinsey Quarterly, Entrepreneur Magazine, TechCrunch, Fast Company, VentureBeat, Business Insider, and Quartz , among others. He speaks regularly on global innovation trends and has presented at Collision, Endeavor, InsureTech Connect, the Social Innovation Summit, SOCAP, and the Corporate Venture Capital Summit. He is most proud of having once been called a ‘sad, low budget Ryan Reynolds’ on Twitter.
Gopi Rangan is the founding partner at Sure Ventures, a Silicon Valley based venture capital firm investing in early stage startups. He invests with a mission to enable peace of mind. He is also the host of The Sure Shot Entrepreneur podcast and teaches entrepreneurship courses at INSEAD.
Chirag is a serial entrepreneur with a special focus on B2B applications across a variety of business models (SaaS, Managed Services, BPO, etc). He has launched commercial ventures all over the world, USA, Europe, Middle East, China, Australasia in particular. He is a fan of boot-strapping! He is especially interested in connecting around the topics of Startups, Scaleups, Social Impact ventures; B2B software, International expansion, Fund-raising, Strategy, and Marketing.
James is an investor/mentor with HealthTech Capital and Civilization Ventures focusing on cutting-edge innovations in health and biology. As an investor, James has backed category-defining companies such as Hum Nutrition, StanPlus and Singular Bio (acquired by Invitae). Prior to venture capital, James was the managing partner for Asia with PwC/PRTM Management Consultants where he helped many of the world’s leading high tech, pharmaceutical and consumer companies to create new markets, transform operations, and improve their global capabilities. He has worked extensively in U.S., Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, and Singapore in the areas of innovation, post-merger integration and business model transformation.
James has an MBA from INSEAD, an MS in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a BA in Biophysics from University of California at Berkeley.Outside of work, James is passionate about education, mentoring and travel. He is particularly interested in connecting around the topics of Healthcare, Investing, Startup Ecosystem.
Mark is a business strategist & Board advisor, management researcher, author, keynote speaker and angel investor. He is the Founder of Silicon Valley based 650 Labs. He works with both startups/scaleups and corporates alike. Since 2001, he has led/supervised engagement teams on more than 400+ clients globally, working a myriad of growth and revenue-related initiatives including growth, corporate strategy, disruptive innovation, business and corporate development, organisational change/transformation and variety of people issues (leadership development, organisational design, talent strategy, corporate culture, etc.) To date, he has worked in over 80 countries globally. His clients span most sectors, including financial services, mobile/telco, retail, media, automotive, healthcare, technology and energy sectors. He has also provided strategic counsel on growth and innovation to the EU and the governments of The Netherlands, France, Turkey, Singapore, Mexico, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand, to name a few. Mark is a regular speaker within INSEAD’s TGM programme.
