My research looks in-depth at the phenomenon of business model innovation - i.e. a competitive strategy used by firms which involves altering critical activities of production within the same product-market domain. Understanding strategic linkages of business model innovation expands the corporate strategy literature that has focused primarily on product diversification.
Empirically, my research is anchored in the private equity (PE) industry which saw the diffusion of a new investment model of "platform deals" in the period 2004-2016. Using this context, my dissertation provides explanations for 1) Firms characteristics that enable adoption of a business model innovation - routines, corporate structure, mode (organic vs. inorganic) 2) Performance consequences of a diversified business model strategy.
