May-Anne Very is a PhD Candidate in Strategy at INSEAD.
Her research lies at the intersection of Corporate Strategy, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Stakeholder Management. In her dissertation, she seeks to understand how firms deploy corporate development activities to pursue CSR goals, in particular through the acquisition of CSR-oriented brands and their underlying resources. By leveraging fine-grained micro data to analyze stakeholder reactions to acquisitions, her work extends our knowledge of the role played by stakeholders in M&A. She also aims at contributing to CSR research by shifting the focus from the benefits of CSR for firm performance to the specific strategies by which firms develop CSR.
May-Anne addresses these questions using large datasets, and has thus developed a deep interest in computational techniques. Her main empirical setting is the consumer packaged food & beverage industry. She built an extensive database of around 500 million observations over the past 15 years –combining data on product-level sales from a panel of 50,000 household across the US, corporate ownership, M&A and CSR-oriented product claims– that she analyzes using high performance computing. In a more recent project, she also uses natural language processing to examine earnings calls.
May-Anne holds a M.Sc. in Management from HEC Paris and a M.Sc. in Economics (M1) from Ecole Polytechnique / Université Paris-Saclay. Prior to joining academia, she has gained international experience in M&A and consulting across Europe and Asia.
