Baron Daniel Janssen

Honorary Chairman of the Board of Directors, Solvay SA

Baron Daniel Janssen (born in 1936) is Honorary Chairman of the Solvay Group, was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Solvay S.A. from June 4, 1998 till May 9, 2006 and Chairman of the Executive Committee from
June 2, 1986 till June 4, 1998.

He is Civil Engineer from Brussels University (1958), together with a Certificate in Nuclear Physics (1959); he then obtained, in 1962, a Master of Business Administration from Harvard University.

He was Cabinet Attaché at the Euratom Commission in 1959/1960 and Lecturer at Brussels University from 1965 to 1972.

He was Chairman of the Federation of Belgian Chemical Industries from 1976 to 1979, Chairman of the Federation of Belgian Enterprises from 1981 to 1984 and President of CEFIC (European Chemical Industry Council) in 1991-1992.

He was Vice-Chairman of the Board of UCB, a Belgian pharmaceutical company, where he worked from 1962 to 1984 and of which he was Chairman of the Executive Committee from 1975 to 1984, before joining Solvay.

He was a Director of Société Générale de Banque and then of Fortis S.A./N.V. and also of Schroeder's, London.

He is a member of the Trilateral Commission and a Trustee of Friends of Europe. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the European Round Table of Industrialists. He is on the Board of the Belgian American Educational Foundation, member of the Advisory Board and Chairman Emeritus of the Solvay Business School, member of Insead Advisory Council, Chairman of Hoover Foundation for Brussels Universities.
