INSEAD Social Impact Scholarships

Our Social Impact Scholarships recognise applicants who have a strong passion for social enterprise and have demonstrated the ability to implement solutions that can benefit society.

Here are a few Social Impact Scholarships for applicants who are keen to embark on an MBA programme at INSEAD.

Social Impact Scholarships

The Andy Burgess Scholarship Fund for Social Entrepreneurship at INSEAD was created in 2005 with the generous support of entrepreneur Andy Burgess (MBA '91D) CEO of Somerset Entertainment.

This endowed fund will provide one scholarship per year for a participant in each January class, in perpetuity, to deserving candidates admitted to the INSEAD MBA programme, who through their experience prior to INSEAD can demonstrate a commitment to social entrepreneurship.

The INSEAD Padma and Rashmi Shah Social Enterprise Scholarship aims to support candidates who have substantial experience from the social enterprise sector and a genuine commitment to the pursuit of a career in social enterprise post-MBA. A social enterprise is defined as an organization that applies commercial strategies to maximize improvements in human and environmental well-being and may include maximizing social impact alongside profits for external shareholders. Charitable activities associated with fund raising will not be considered.

This scholarship is an endowed gift to INSEAD from the Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (Sylff). The Fund was established in 1987 by the Nippon Foundation. The Sylff programme demonstrates its commitment to education through awarding fellowships to promising graduate students in the social sciences and humanities. 69 universities and consortia worldwide, including INSEAD, have received endowments of US $1 million. The Sylff programme is now building a worldwide community of young leaders made up of the Sylff Fellows at all funded institutions. By receiving this award at INSEAD, candidates automatically join the Sylff worldwide network and gain opportunity to apply for additional Sylff support programs.

As a philanthropist and the founding chairman of the Nippon Foundation, Ryoichi Sasakawa articulated a philosophy that remains the driving force of the programme today. "The world is one family", he maintained, "and all mankind are brothers and sisters". The Sylff programme is based on these principles. By helping to create a new generation of leaders, it seeks to overcome the divisions of nationality, religion, ethnic background and politics. Sylff would like to encourage candidates of any nationality to broaden their knowledge and enhance their career opportunities through the INSEAD MBA programme.
One Sylff award will be granted per year.

INSEAD develops responsible, thoughtful leaders and entrepreneurs who create value for their organisations and their communities. The school believes in business being a force for good. To reinforce this, we have established the Loan Assistance Programme for our graduates who choose to pursue careers in organizations with a clearly defined social or environmental purpose that aim to better society through constructive means. This can be in the public or not-for-profit sectors, for-profit social ventures and social investment firms.
