Selina Stihl

Nationality: German
Year Graduated: 2015
Current Role: Advisory and Supervisory Board Member, ANDREAS STIHL AG & Co. KG

As a result of the EMBA, I have managed to make a successful transition from management to leadership.

Tell us more about your professional and educational background. What were you doing prior to joining the INSEAD EMBA?

I started my career as an auditor specialising in the Oil and Energy markets. I qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Deloitte in London in 2005. Between 2006 and 2011, I was Managing Director of Finance for the German division of a European Beverages Group producing private label juices. With a turnover of around 300 million Euros and 700 employees in Germany, I was responsible for a team of 23 within the Finance, Controlling, IT and Legal departments.

In 2011, I joined the family business in Brazil where I was Vice President of Finance and Administration. I am responsible for Finance, Controlling, IT, Human Resources, and Infrastructure/EHS.

Why did you decide to do an EMBA and why did you choose the INSEAD EMBA?

It has always been my goal to study at INSEAD because of its international profile and outstanding reputation both in terms of its academics and its overall experience. In 2005, I was accepted for the full-time MBA program, which I deferred and then cancelled due to the promotions I received at work. I have always regretted this decision and hence decided to apply for the EMBA in 2014.

How has the INSEAD EMBA changed your life and/or perspective?

Both in business and in my personal life, the EMBA has encouraged me to see more opportunities. The EMBA experience has broadened my horizons by bringing people with so many different experiences, views and perspectives together. The programme exposes everyone to share and reflect on these diverse experiences and backgrounds.

What are your thoughts on the curriculum, faculty and class experiences?

The EMBA is very well-organised. For instance, the frequency of modules allows for a good balance between work and on campus time. Furthermore, almost all academic contents were helpful and added value. This is in part due to the world class INSEAD faculty and also due to the EMBA participants. The level of contributions in class is very high, and outside the classroom, the bonds created are truly special.

How has the EMBA made a difference in your career?

As a result of the EMBA, I have managed to make a successful transition from management to leadership. The EMBA has also prepared me to develop a more strategic outlook and it prepared me for my role as a member of the Supervisory Board in the head office in Germany, which I assumed at the beginning of 2016.

Was there a particular module that you enjoyed most, and why?

“Identifying New Business Opportunities” was one of my favorite modules, because it encouraged so many diverse ideas in the class and required a certain degree of speed, strategic thinking and open exchange.

Did the Leadership Development Programme (LDP) make an impact on you?

The LDP journey was one of the most important elements of the EMBA programme and it made a strong impact on me. It encouraged me to reflect, exchange thoughts with others, and question myself. This challenged us to look at Leadership Development as not only consisting of career and business concerns, but also concerned with being a well-balanced individual.

What advice would you give potential participants who are looking to do an INSEAD EMBA?

I would recommend them to prepare for the best time of their lives and expect to leave the programme a more well-rounded and grounded person. I would also recommend that they be open to the cultural diversity and share their experiences. You will not find a group so intelligent in so many different forms giving you open feedback and new perspectives on life.
