Donald Hambrick’s call to understand the psychological side of TMTs is an invitation to open up the “proverbial black box”. Hitherto, this has been a neglected area. The author argues that in addressing this gap, the role of emotions and unconscious processes need to be integrated into any analysis.

He develops a multi-level framework of emotional processes and incorporate these into the role of TMTs as critical in managing the affects that follow imposed change. Psychoanalytic theory is used to understand how these micro-dynamics unfold.

The author concludes with the implications and strategies for practicing managers and research.
