Most economic theories of internal organization conceptualize the firm as a "hierarchy". In this essay, the authors argue against this conceptualization on the ground that a shared context rather than a structural hierarchy represents the essence of all internal organization, in general, and of the organization and governance of megacorporations, in particular.
