Three Questions for Mapping and Developing Strategic Management Perspectives on International Businessin International Business: An Emerging Vision
Authors: Kim W. Chan, Mauborgne Renee
This paper provides a normative framework for assessing the usefulness of applying strategic management perspectives to the study of international management issues. This framework, which is couched in three generic questions, is applied to examine the value of two new approaches, the evolutionary and the population ecologist perspectives, to the study of international management issues. The application of this frame-work reveals that while international management literature needs to pay more attention to the explanatory and predictive roles of theory, the use of strategic management perspectives without establishing their unique suitability to address the problems of international management is a futile academic exercise.
