World Institutional Systems Repository

The World Institutional Systems Repository (WISR) is a resource for scholars working on comparative institutional analysis, including (and not limited to) Varieties of Capitalism and National Business Systems.

Research on the topic is ongoing in multiple streams across different disciplines, which makes it hard to keep up with the latest findings to build on them. The objective of WISR is to help solve this problem by aggregating insights from across research streams and disciplines.

For now, this page provides 2 types of contents: a list of recommended readings by leading scholars in the field, and a summary document of typologies of institutional systems in the literature. Both are regularly updated, and new categories of contents will be added over time. If you have any contents you would like to see included, please mail me.

What We Should Read: Kathleen Thelen's Recommendations

On an occasional basis, this section presents a brief list of "what we should read" curated by a leading scholar so we can see what s/he thinks is cutting-edge thinking in the field.

Kathleen Thelen has kindly shared her recommendations. The previous list by Peter A. Hall, founding father of the Varieties of Capitalism approach (with David Soskice), is available here.

ReferencesWhy Kathleen Thelen Recommends Them
Gunnar Trumbull, 2012An interesting extension of varieties of capitalism framework to understand cross national variation in consumer protection policies
Silja Häusermann and Hanna Schwander, 2012An insightful piece that explores cross-national variation in labor market trends across different varieties of capitalism
Noam Gidron and Peter A. Hall, 2020An important effort to understand the links between economic and cultural explanations for the rise of right wing populism
Alexander Hertel-Fernandez, Jacob S. Hacker, Paul Pierson, and Kathleen Thelen, forthcoming , Cambridge U. Press (no link yet)Contains a number of chapters that explore the distinctive features of the American political economy against the backdrop of the varieties of capitalism framework

Typologies

The literature has proposed a multitude of typologies of institutional systems, such as the distinction between coordinated market economies and liberal market economies (CMEs vs. LMEs). The documents linked below provide a curated overview of these typologies. All 3 documents contain the same references, just the sorting order differs.

The master list is a living document, which means it will be updated regularly. Current version is 1.2. If there is a typology you think should be added, please mail me.

Teaching

Theme

My classes are designed to help individuals and organizations be effective and successful in doing business internationally, that is, outside their home country context. In essence, I help equip program participants with the tools they need to go from country A to country B without getting a bloody nose. This includes the search for market-appropriate products and innovation through the application of Blue Ocean Strategy.

MBA

  • Strategies for Asia Pacific (Elective)
An international business course situated in the Asian context. The course aims to help participants understand how Asian markets function, to provide frameworks for successful market entry, and to enable them to be effective managers in daily operations in Asia.
  • Business & Society: The Political Environment (Core)
A required course for all MBA participants on business and politics.

EMBA

  • Strategies for Asia Pacific (Key Management Challenge)
A condensed version of the MBA course by the same name, with a focus on the business context in Asia Pacific.
  • International Political Analysis (Core)
A required course for all GEMBA participants on business and politics.

Executive Development Programmes

I have directed and taught in a range of INSEAD open-enrollment programs. I am the Program Director of one open-enrollment program, International Management in Asia Pacific.

In company-specific programs and consulting engagements, I have worked, as faculty or program director, with clients such as Aberdeen Asset Management, Adidas, Allen & Overy, Alstom, BHP-Billiton, Chinese Business Executive Academy Dalian (CBEAD), Datacraft, Dimension Data, EDF, Freudenberg, Gazprom, Gazprom Neft, Gemalto, Google, GSK, Hana Financial, Heineken, IE Singapore, IFM, KPMG, LG Electronics, MAS (Sri Lanka), Midea, Monash University, National Australian Bank, Nitto, Petronas, Saudi Aramco, SingTel, SK, Swire, Thomson-Reuters, TNK-BP, Toshiba, and Westinghouse.

Guest Lectures

I have taught repeatedly in the TRIUM EMBA program as well as in the EMBA program of the University of Zurich. I have further given guest lectures at Ewha Womans [sic] University, the Free University Berlin, the Pohang University of Science and Technology, Seoul National University, and the Vienna University of Economics and Business.
