Mr Lai co-founded Affinity. To this end, he co-led the management spin-off from UBS Capital Asia Pacific and the raising of the first Affinity Fund of US$ 700 million in 2004 and the current fund of US$2.8 billion in 2007. He joined UBS Capital Asia in 1996 where he was responsible for day to day operations of the private equity business in Asia including that of pioneering and building the successful buy-out business. His last position in UBS Capital was President, Region Asia. Prior to joining UBS, Mr Lai worked for Prudential Asset Management Asia as a Director. Before that Mr Lai was with Suez Apac, the private equity arm of Banque Indosuez. Mr Lai has over 17 years of private equity experience in the region during which he was involved in all stages and types of investment models in a wide range of industries. His regional experience included South East Asia, Greater China, Korea and Australia.
Mr Lai has also worked for the investment banking house Morgan Grenfell where he specialized in Structured and Project Finance. He began his career with Arthur Andersen where he was a pioneer in the EDP audit practice.
Mr Lai holds a degree in Accountancy with First Class Honours from the National University of Singapore and an FCPA in Singapore and Australia. He speaks English, Bahasa and Cantonese.
