Welcome

The Technology and Operations Management Group are delighted to invite you to a day-long conference—followed by a Birthday Dinner—celebrating Bob’s historic achievements in the Earth Sciences. Speakers and delegates from all over the world will pay tribute to this scholar who in the 1960’s was already pushing economists to confront so-called externalities.
Bob is widely considered to be one of the founding fathers of the field of Industrial Ecology, which links the Earth Sciences with Economics and Physics. By the time he joined INSEAD as the Novartis Chaired Professor in Management and the Environment in 1992, Bob had already published a library shelf of books and papers devoted to the role that energy and materials, like oil and gas, play in the economy and in society.
With today’s climate crisis upon us, many academics are revisiting Bob’s pioneering treatises — his first major paper on the subject was published in a top economics journal in 1969 — but unfortunately his voice was not heard outside of industrial ecology at that time. His 90th birthday has stirred Bob to summarize his decades of thought in a new working paper that he will briefly present at the opening of the conference.
Your attendance at his 90th birthday celebration will be warmly appreciated. Come and shake hands with Bob, one of the first academics who deeply understood the fundamental role energy and materials play in the economy.
