Born in Jerusalem, Hatem studied in the UK (Eton College, followed by a Chemical Engineering Degree at Salford University), before embarking on his career in Abu Dhabi in 1976 as a Petroleum Engineer with ADCO. He then joined Total in 1980 as a Reservoir Engineer.
In 1984 Hatem took up a senior training role in Indonesia, before returning to the UAE in 1987 as Head of the Reservoir Department at Total Abu Al Bukhoosh, where he later progressed to Petroleum Development Manager.
From 1993 he spent two years in the Reservoir Division at Total’s HQ in Paris as Head of Europe & CIS Region, before moving to the Group’s New Projects Division where he was Head of the Africa Region until 1997.
From 1997 to 2000, Hatem served as Managing Director of Total Upstream Nigeria; from 2000 to 2003, he was Managing Director of Total E&P Libya; and then from 2004 to 2009 he was Managing Director of Total E&P Syria.
Immediately before taking up his current Abu Dhabi based role in the UAE, he was the Managing Director of both Total E&P Yemen & Total Yemen LNG from 2009 to August 2013.
Outside of work, Hatem’s interests include reading, music, current affairs and cultural interaction.
