Charting Growth Strategies in Family Firms – Paradoxes and Pathways

In today’s era of volatile market and with the rapid changes and increased complexity, it is paramount for family businesses to navigate pathways for growth and paradoxes for their longevity and success.

A family-owned business typically evolves through different lifecycles and pursues distinctive growth strategies in keeping up with the maturity of the business and its aspiration for the future. The stages of transformation can be broadly classified into 4 stages:

  • Establishing an ‘entrepreneur start-up model’ where the founder has absolute control of the business strategy and direction.
  • Moving to the ‘family in business’ stage where more members engage in the vision and scaling of the business triggering the need to manage paradoxes and opportunities ahead.
  • Transitioning into an institutionalized model, the ‘business family’ stage is where the family enterprise reached significant growth which favors the pursuit of a conglomerate model with a portfolio of diversified businesses.
  • Setting up a ‘family office’ as a vehicle to creating sustainable investment pathways to perpetuate long-term success and legacy, and ensure engagement across family members.

In this webinar and digital dialogue session, we will examine the growth strategies by addressing the challenges family business owners encounter at the different transition stages. While some founders may face the generational succession dilemma, the hurdle of shareholders conflicts or the lack of capital injection to finance new investment opportunities, others may have to deal with the transformation to a listed company which instigates professionalization process for effective compliance and transparency.

As the family businesses continue to mature and grow, owners may consider taking on non-executive roles while engaging professionals to manage the cumulative family assets and wealth for sustainable long-term impact in line with the family values, mission, and purpose.

Join us for the virtual Family Enterprise Day as we glean insights from academic experts, distinguished family enterprise guest speakers and MBA panelists on some of the key challenges and opportunities facing family businesses on their growth transition journey.
