Cees J.A. Van Lede, MBA'67

Cees J.A. van Lede graduated at the University of Leiden (Law, 1966) and at INSEAD in Fontainebleau (MBA, 1967). Mr. van Lede was with Shell (1967 to 1969) before joining McKinsey and Company in 1969. For McKinsey he was posted in the Netherlands, USA, Belgium, France and Brazil, respectively. From 1977 until 1980, he was CEO of Koninklijke Nederhorst Bouw BV, a Netherlands-based construction company, and after Nederhorst was acquired by Hollandse Beton Groep in 1982, he became a member of the HBG Board. From 1984 until 1991, he held the position of chairman of the Federation of Netherlands Industry (VNO) and was Vice President of UNICE (Union of Industrial and Employers' Confederations of Europe) from 1991 to 1994.
He joined Akzo NV as a member of the Board of Management and was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Group in 1993. In 1994 he became Chairman and CEO until his retirement in 2003.
Mr. van Lede holds various non-executive functions. He is a member of the Board of Philips Electronics and Air France-KLM and is member of the Advisory Council of INSEAD. He was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Dutch Central Bank, Heineken NV and Imtech, and served on the Board of Air Liquide. He also serves on the Boards of several non-profit organizations.
Mr. van Lede received the Royal Decoration of Commander in the Order of the Dutch Lion (the Netherlands) and was named Commander 1st Class of the Royal Order of the Polar Star (Sweden).
He is married to Vanessa Quarles van Ufford, with one daughter and two sons.
