General Information  

Industry overviews

  • Marketline (Datamonitor) – Wide range of industries (2000+).
    Search by industry name or "Find Information" tab to browse industry headings.
  • Euromonitor – For the consumer goods sector.
    "Industries" tab; Also, Under "Search", select "Text search" or "Menu search"
  • Global Insight - For the automotive, energy, healthcare and telecoms sectors.
    Choose sector under "MyInsight Services" menu.
  • Business Insights - International, but strong UK focus covering the consumer goods, energy, financial services, healthcare and technology sectors.
    Search by industry keyword or "List reports by industry".
  • CIO Knowledge Center (Datamonitor) - For profiles and market research in the IT sector.
    Search by industry name or "Find Information" tab to browse industry headings.
  • ISI Emerging Markets – For emerging markets. Includes non-English sources.
    Choose country first, then Industry > Industry profiles.
  • Standard & Poor's Market Insight - For US industry surveys with a financial focus.
    Under "Industry", select GICS sub-industry. Requires a password.

News and articles

  • Factiva - Most complete source for news worldwide, including FT, WSJ and Economist and non-English sources.
    Use the industry index for precision;.
    Use the source index to limit to trade publications within an industry;
    Use the "Editor's choice" under the subject index.
  • Business Source Complete – For news from trade magazines as well as articles from practitioner/academic journals.
    Type the industry in the subject index or use the NAICS code index for precision.
  • Windhover - For news in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
    Browse > Articles by subject; Search > Articles
  • Doriot Library’s reference collection – For books on various industries.
    Located in the REF300 section on the ground floor.

Standard classifications

  • ORBIS – To cross-reference SIC, NAICS, NACE as well as some national codes.
    See the "support" menu.
  • NAICS & SIC classifications - For information on the widely-used North American classification and its predecessor, SIC.
  • National classifications - For information on specific national classifications.

Trade associations

  • Doriot Library’s reference collection – For directories of trade and business associations.
    Located in the REF190 section on the ground floor.
  • Google - To find trade associations with a web presence.
    Try the name of the industry and "association", "federation" or "organization".
Identifying Companies in an Industry   

Creating lists of companies by sector

  • Capital IQ – Best interface and searching capabilities. Can map CIQ classification to NAICS and SIC. Includes private companies.
    Screening > Company screening > "Industry" or "Business description" or "Products". Requires a personal password.
  • Thomson Analytics – Allows searching by ICB, SIC and GIC classifications.
    Screening > Basic search > "Industry" or "Business description"
  • ORBIS – The only source for searching the NACE classification. Includes private companies.
    Default search screen > Industry keyword/code;
    Expert search screen > Text search (incl. business description).

  • Marketline (Datamonitor) – Market share for a wide range of industries (2000+).
    See Industry profiles.
  • Euromonitor – For market share in the consumer goods sector.
    After an industry search, select "Company shares" or "Brand shares" under "Statistics".

  • Company rankings compiled by the Library – For well-known lists from the business press.
  • Thomson Analytics – Best source for ready-made rankings that can then be customized.
    Screening & targeting > Search library
  • Marketline (Datamonitor) – For rankings linked to company profiles.
    Industry overview page > "Company rankings";
    Company overview page > "Key competitors" >"Competitors by market" or "Company lists"
  • Bloomberg – For investment bank rankings.

Financial data, including ratios and stock indices

  • Capital IQ Financial analysis of S&P sectors as well as user-created industry lists. Best interface.
    Market analysis > Industry analysis.
    For company sets, choose a project, then Screening > Comps. Requires a personal password.
  • Bloomberg – Financial analysis of Bloomberg industry sectors.
    Type IBQ.
  • Thomson Analytics – Financials for customizable industry lists.
    Create the industry list, then "Comparables";
    Create the industry list, then in Excel, use "Report wizard".
  • ORBIS - Best for including private companies.
    Create the industry list, then "Peer analyses" tab at the top.
  • Doriot Library’s reference collection – Industry ratios based on large samples.
