Frequently Asked Questions
1.1 What's in the Library Catalogue?

"The Library Catalogue contains more than 400,000 references, with about 100 being added every day, but to what? Books certainly, but there are other resources too...

Books - 58,000 in total, mainly English language, on business and management as well as related subjects, held in any of the two INSEAD Libraries.

Journal articles - from 1993 to 2007, indexed from the Library's core journals.

Periodical information - giving details of both INSEAD Libraries' holdings and links to the electronic version where possible.

INSEAD publications - articles, books, chapters, cases, working papers and theses produced by PhD students and by INSEAD Professors during their tenure at INSEAD.

Working Papers - from INSEAD, the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and a small number of others sources as well.

Remember when searching the Catalogue that no subject terms are assigned. You must therefore use the title field to enter your keywords.
1.2 How can I access the Library Catalogue from off-campus?

Everybody can access the Library Catalogue from off-campus, but you will need to login as an INSEAD user if you want to be able to open the pdf files:

1 - Go to the Library Catalogue.
2 - Enter the 5 digits of your INSEAD card number.
3 - Enter your last name.
4 - Click on the Login button.
5 - You now have access to all the facilities of the Library's Catalogue as if you were on campus.

PS: If you don't have your card number on hand, just click on the Guest Access button. You can still search the catalogue but you won't get the links to the full-text documents.

Should you have any connection problems, please consult our Connection tips.
1.3 Can I find out the contents of a book without picking it off the shelf?

Tables of contents of books are available electronically so you can get an idea of a book's contents even before borrowing it, especially useful if the book is only available on the other campus.

Click on the PDF icon appearing on top of the book record to read the table of contents. You can also search the tables of contents by using the "Search book table of contents" button in the library catalogue.

Please note that tables of contents are only available for books added to the Library Catalogue from late 1999 onwards.
1.4 How can I find out what new books have been added to the Libraries recently?

A list of new books acquired by the INSEAD Libraries is produced every month, to help keep you uptodate with what's being added in your subject area. It is broken down by subject and includes a feature on one of the new acquisitions that month.

To receive the new edition by email each month, sign up to our mailing list by contacting the Doriot Library (INSEAD members only).

Other ways to get hold of the New Books list:
  • It is available on the Library homepage.
  • Hard copies are available in the Libraries.
  • It is posted on the General Use Bulletin Board (Europe Campus) or K Drive, folder New Books List (Asia Campus).
1.5 / 6.2 What if I need an article or a book TODAY and the Library does not have it?

Through the Urgent Inter-Library Loans Service the Library can get an article in 7 hours and a book in 24 hours for you!

How much does it cost?
€ 38 per item.
Free if the delivery time is not met!

How to place an order?
Just send an email to Sophie Plisson, mentioning that your request is URGENT and giving us a budget number.
2.1 How can I find an INSEAD publication?

INSEAD publications are documents written by Professors during their tenure at INSEAD and PhD theses. Whether you are looking for an article written by an INSEAD Professor, need an INSEAD case, or want to find out what Professors in a particular area are working on, check the Library Catalogue! It contains details of all books, journal articles, book chapters, cases, working papers, theses and conference papers published at INSEAD.

To identify material:

1 - Go to the Library Catalogue.
2 - Tick the appropriate boxes in the All INSEAD Research column and enter your search terms in the Find box. Click on Search.
3 - Tick the items you require and click on the "view" button to see more details.
4 - Books, book chapters and cases are only available in the Library. Working papers can be downloaded directly from the catalogue and articles can be downloaded by using the Journal Finder.
3.1 I'm looking for a particular journal - where do I start?

Click on Journal Finder in the left frame on the Library's site. Type the name of the journal in the Find box and hit search. All journals available in paper and in electronic format are included in the Journal Finder, therefore saving you the time of looking in each individual database and our online catalog. For each title, all formats are indicated, with a direct link to the electronic provider.

D - The article is not available.
Contact your Library which will obtain the article on Inter-Library Loan. Average turnround time is 1 week. An urgent delivery service is available at a cost of € 38 including tax.
3.4 What about an HBR article?

All the articles in Harvard Business Review - from #1 vol.2 - are available in PDF format through the "Business Source Complete" database. Click on the Electronic Resources list from the Library homepage and select BSC in the list.
3.5 How can I get hold of a back issue of a journal?

Even if the journal is not available electronically, the Library may still hold the hard copy of a back issue. Journal holdings can be checked in the Library Catalogue or with the Journal Finder. Alternately the Library staff will be happy to help you.
4.1 Where can I find analyst reports on a company?

On the Library’s Electronic Resources page, go to Investext Plus . You can access complete reports from over 500 investment banks worldwide such as Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse First Boston, Merrill Lynch, Pricewaterhouse Coopers Securities, and many more. These reports cannot be found on the free web!
4.2 How can I create a personal account in Bloomberg? / How can I login to Bloomberg?

Steps to Create Your Personal Login:
  • Go to the Bloomberg Terminal in the Library.
  • Make sure the terminal is not currently logged in by pressing the red CONN DEFAULT key to the right of the F-keys on the top of the keyboard.
  • Press the green <GO> key without filling in any username or password.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen.
  • You will be asked for a telephone number as part of the login creation procedure. This number must be a number you can access while you are at the terminal. If you have a cell phone, use it. If you have no cell phone, you can use the telephone near the Bloomberg terminal in the Library. [Europe Campus (33)1 60 72 93 20]
  • After filling out the required information, an employee from Bloomberg will call you within 10 minutes to confirm your login. He or she will guide you through the remaining steps to activate your login. You must be at the Bloomberg terminal.

5.1 I'm not sure how to enter a login/password/domain

1a - Off-campus access:

For most resources, only your IT network account login is required to connect to our databases. If you are connected to VPN, please log out to access the library's electronic resources. On the Electronic resources login page, use only your username (ex. 3_lastname) and password. Do not include the domain name (FBL or SGP).

For MBA participants only, please use one of these 2 possibilities as your username:

- your email address (firstname.lastname@insead.edu)

- or your ID badge number

(i.e. 9999999)

1b - On and off-campus access: 'get password'

A database may require an additional generic username and password; this will be indicated in the database description. To get the special database login details, click on 'get password', then login with your network account to access the protected page. Depending on your computer's operating system you may or may not have to specify your domain (FBL or SGP).

Two examples with Windows XP:
domain name is already visible
the domain name was typed in
5.2 I can't access the library's electronic resources from off-campus

If you are sure you properly entered your login/password and the system doesn't allow you to access the library's electronic resources, maybe it's because your network account does not have the proper settings. Please contact IT support in Fontainebleau or in Singapore and ask them to check that your account has a Remote Access Permission.
5.3 I can't access the library's catalogue from off-campus as an INSEAD user

"Enter your card number": a 5 or 6 digit number appears on the back of your INSEAD ID card, on the top right corner.

"Enter your last name": please be sure to enter only your last name, without your first name or domain.

If the connection fails, please contact us! Sometimes the card number may have been changed (i.e. you got a new card after losing the first one).
5.4 Off campus access with Internet Explorer 7 - how to deal with security warning
If you access the library's resources from off campus using IE7, you will see the following warning:
  -  -  -
There is no risk just clicking on "Continue" and searching our resources.
It is possible to avoid this warning by importing a certificate:
- choose the "Continue" option
- click on the Certificate Error tab and then on View Certificates
- a Certificate window opens, click on Install Certificate then follow and accept all steps of the process
- the library proxy's certificate will now be accepted automatically by your browser.
Check the step by step procedure if this is not clear enough.
6.1 I use EndNote to create bibliographies. Can the Library help?

Contact IT to get your individual licence for EndNote. The Library provides information and tools to import references from the library databases to EndNote whenever possible.

Just go to our EndNote page and follow the instructions for the database and EndNote version concerned.

Please note that the Libraries also provide free access and support to RefWorks another citation management software.
6.3 Can EDP participants access the Library's resources?

All participants have access to the Library Catalogue and the electronic resources for the duration of the Programme. However, access is not permitted after the programme is completed.
7.1 What if I'm away from the campus but need access to certain of the Library's electronic resources?
  • Most databases are available off-campus. Check the Electronic Resources lists for the one you require. For databases require special usernames and passwords, which you can download by clicking on the "get password" link from the Electronic Resources list. In case of problem, see the connection tips.

  • There is no need to use VPN to access the library Electronic Resources. Just open your browser, go to the library homepage and click on Electronic Resources; then click on the database you need.

  • When clicking on the database link, you will be prompted for your username and password. Make sure you enter your regular INSEAD network password.
7.2 What if I switch between the Asia and Europe campuses?

As far as the libraries are concerned, you will have access to the same resources and services, whichever campus you're on:
  • A common catalogue for both libraries.
  • Access to the same electronic resources.
  • A single registration: you can borrow books from either campus using your library ID.
  • Books can be returned to any library, whichever campus they come from.
  • For items not in the libraries' collections, both libraries offer an Inter-Library Loans service.
  • Faculty - the ETOC service follows you via your email!
