William Maddux is an Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour at INSEAD. He is also the PhD Coordinator for the OB Area.
Professor Maddux is a social psychologist interested in the basic psychological principles that drive human behavior in an increasingly globalized society. His research is primarily driven by two underlying questions: 1) How does culture impact how we think, feel, and behave in the social world? 2) How can individuals more effectively manage conflict as the world becomes increasingly diverse? He looks at these phenomena broadly, from intrapersonal, interpersonal, and intergroup perspectives. His work on culture examines phenomena such as how cross-cultural experiences affect individuals' creativity, and how culture impacts social perception, decision-making, emotions, trust, stereotypes, and behavioral mimicry. His work on negotiations looks at the psychological variables (e.g., trust, mimicry, perspective-taking, culture, emotions) that significantly impact the negotiation process. His research has appeared in peer-reviewed academic journals such as the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Psychological Science, and American Psychologist, as well as in Harvard Business Review, Harvard's Negotiation Newsletter, the Sloan Management Review, and in media outlets such as The Economist, The New York Times, BBC Radio, The Financial Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek, The Boston Globe, CNN, National Public Radio, US News & World Report, and Le Monde.
Professor Maddux currently teaches the core Organisational Behaviour 1 course in the MBA program; he has also taught electives on Negotiations in both the MBA and EMBA programs, as well as a core PhD course on the Behavioral Sciences. In addition, Professor Maddux has done executive education and program direction for a number of companies, such as Astellas, Diageo, Takeda, NYSE/Euronext, Stibbe, and L'Oreal; he has also taught in several Open Enrollment Programs at INSEAD, such as the Advanced Managers Program, the International Executive Program, the Mergers and Acquisitions and Corporate Strategy Program, the Healthcare Compliance Leadership Program, and the Leading Management Education Program. Professor Maddux holds a PhD in Social Psychology from Ohio State University, and a B.A. in Psychology from Johns Hopkins University. Prior to joining the faculty at INSEAD, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor and Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. A native of the United States, he has lived and worked for several years both France and Japan.
