Narayan teaches in the Strategy area at INSEAD. His areas of teaching interest include, strategy formulation and implementation, with a focus on comparative healthcare systems, regional contingencies in strategy design, and strategic anticipation - from forecasting to scenario analysis. Narayan has conducted courses in these areas for Directors and senior executives of private and public-sector firms, Ph.D. students, MBAs and undergraduates.

Prior to joining INSEAD, Narayan worked as a strategy consultant with the Monitor Group, and with his own firm, Clean Slate Consulting. He worked with companies in FMCG, financial services, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, retail and many others. In a unique instance, Narayan devised solutions for the healthcare financing needs of an entire nation. In another, he worked to develop practical and actionable strategies for the competitive success an industry grouping.

Before becoming a full-time consultant, Narayan taught strategy and policy at New York University's Stern School, and the business faculties of the University of Alberta (Canada) and the National University of Singapore. He published in areas including forecasting, value conflicts, strategic choice, organizational structure and culture, and other strategy related areas. He has also presented papers at academic conferences such as The Academy of Management, The Strategic Management Society and ORSA/TIMS.

Narayan teaches extensively in executive programs and consults for a variety of firms. His client list includes global multinationals, regional firms, industry groupings, government-linked bodies and government ministries.

Narayan maintains a special interest in the healthcare arena. He has worked at the level of national healthcare systems, designing and optimizing healthcare financing and delivery, and also at the firm level, helping hospitals differentiate and position themselves for success. He has helped large Integrated Delivery Networks decide on the scope of services they should offer and ways in which they can offer holistic health maintenance solutions for their users. Finally, Narayan has also worked with individual pharmaceutical companies on issues from sales force effectiveness to designing processes for the efficient ramping up of production of new products.
