Miguel Brendl joined INSEAD in 1999 after serving on the faculties of the University of Heidelberg (1998-99) and of the University of Konstanz (1995-1998). He received a PhD degree in psychology from Columbia University in 1995, following his studies of psychology and business administration at the University of Mannheim.
Professor Brendl's expertise lies in the psychological foundations of consumer behaviour. At INSEAD he teaches marketing, consumer behaviour, psychology, and experimental research methods. His research investigates the psychological underpinnings of how people make decisions, specifically the influence of goals and unconscious mental processes. His findings have appeared in some of the most prestigious academic journals of marketing and of psychology, such as the Journal of Consumer Research, Psychological Science, the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, the Advances of Experimental Social Psychology, the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, and the Psychology of Learning and Motivation. He is a member of the editorial review boards of the Journal of Consumer Research and the Journal of Consumer Psychology.
