Javier Gimeno is Professor of Strategy at INSEAD, and the Aon Dirk Verbeek Chaired Professor in International Risk and Strategic Management. A Spanish na-tional, he holds a PhD degree in strategic management from Purdue University. Since 2001, he has taught strategy and industry and competitive analysis to MBAs, Executive MBAs, PhDs, and in executive programs for leading global companies, such as Coca-Cola, EDF, Schlumberger, Starwood, First Choice, and IBM.

His research focuses on understanding competitive strategy decisions, and how these decisions lead to competitive interactions and performance consequences. He has done research and developed pedagogical materials in industries like travel and transportation (airlines), telecommunication services, electricity, and computer equipment. These industries face very intense and dynamic rivalry, and are excellent “laboratories” to understand and learn about competitive dynamics. His current research seeks to integrate risk management criteria in the evaluation of strategic opportunities.

Javier’s research has been published in the top academic journals in strategic management, and has received research awards from the leading professional associations. For instance, his dissertation on multi-market competition in the US airline industry received the prize to the best doctoral dissertation in strategy in its year. Javier sits in the editorial board of several top academic journals in strat-egy and management, such as the Academy of Management Journal and the Stra-tegic Management Journal.

Javier has played a leadership role in several major professional associations. He is currently on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management (AoM), an association of over 18,000 management academics worldwide. He has been the chairman of the Business Policy and Strategy division of AoM - the largest organi-sation of strategy academics and practitioners, with over 5,000 members world-wide, and was the Chairman of Strategic Management Society International Con-ference in 2006.
