Hongwei Xu is Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship at INSEAD.
He received his PhD from Stanford Graduate School of Business. He also holds two master's degrees from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and an undergraduate degree from Renmin University of China in Beijing.
Professor Xu's research focuses on the origin and evolution of organizations and industries, and the social, political, and economic consequences of organizational diversity in communities. Currently, he is studying how diverse organizations in a community can integrate or segregate the community and consequently affect its ability to act collectively to establish cultural institutions to serve the community. Empirically, he follows up 50 U.S. local communities for more than 120 years. Another project examines how the legitimation of entrepreneurship at societal level dynamically shapes the entrepreneurial entry of individuals from different social strata in China’s transitional economy from 1978 to 1996.
