Anil K. Gupta is widely recognised as one of the world’s leading experts on strategy, globalisation, and emerging markets. Professor Gupta served as The INSEAD Chaired Professor of Strategy until December 2010. Besides his current affiliation with INSEAD as a Visiting Professor, he is also the Michael Dingman Chair in Global Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the Smith School of Business at The University of Maryland at College Park. He has also served as a visiting professor at Stanford University. He received a doctorate from Harvard Business School, an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management at Ahmedabad, and a B.Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur.
Professor Gupta is the author, coauthor, or coeditor of over seventy papers and four books: Getting China and India Right (Wiley, 2009), The Quest for Global Dominance (Wiley, 2008), Smart Globalization (Wiley, 2003), and Global Strategy and Organization (Wiley, 2003). He is currently co-editing a new book, Global Strategies for Emerging Asia, to be published by Wiley in early 2012.
Professor Gupta serves as a regular columnist for Bloomberg BusinessWeek. His opinion pieces have also appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Chief Executive, The Daily Telegraph, South China Morning Post, China Daily, Economic Times, and other outlets. He has also been interviewed by The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, USA Today, Bloomberg, BusinessWeek, BBC, CNBC, Fox News as well as other leading media. In 2010, he was named as a rising superstar by the Economist magazine.
Professor Gupta’s numerous honours and awards include the Glueck Best Paper Award in Business Policy and Strategy from the Academy of Management, inclusion in the Academy of Management Journals’ Hall of Fame, campus-wide Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award from The University of Maryland, the Allen J. Krowe Award for Excellence in Teaching from The University of Maryland, Best Professor in Strategy Award from CMO Asia, and recognition by BusinessWeek as an outstanding professor. Professor Gupta has also served as a member of the editorial board (including as Guest Editor) for Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Global Strategy Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, and Information Systems Research. He is an elected lifetime Fellow of the Strategic Management Society and the Academy of International Business.
Professor Gupta serves regularly as a keynote speaker at major conferences and corporate forums including the World Economic Forum, Global Entrepolis Singapore, BusinessWeek CEO Forum, the CEO2CEO Summit organised by Chief Executive magazine, the Yale CEO Summit, and the Global Leadership Conference, Shanghai. He has also served as a consultant, adviser, keynote speaker and/or executive education faculty on strategy and globalisation with several of the largest corporations in the world.
Professor Gupta is an elected member of the board of directors of Origene Technologies. He has earlier served on the boards of directors of Omega Worldwide (NASDAQ), Vitalink Pharmaceutical Services Inc. (NYSE), and NeoMagic Corporation (NASDAQ). He is also a member of the board of advisors for Asia Silicon Valley Connection (San Mateo, CA) and India Globalization Capital. Additionally, he has been an advisor to the US-India Business Council.
