Professor Van Wassenhove's research is concerned with operational excellence, supply chain management, quality, continual improvement and learning. His recent research focus is on closed-loop supply chains, humanitarian logistics and disaster management. Professor Van Wassenhove publishes extensively in various academic journals and is the author of many teaching case studies. He also regularly consults for major international organisations.

Assistant Professor of Technology and Operations Management

Sameer Hasija earned his PhD (Operations Management) and M.S. (Management Science Methods) from the Simon School of Business at the University of Rochester and his B.Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras. At INSEAD Sameer teaches the Process and Operations Management MBA core course along with other Technology and Operations Management elective courses. He also teaches a PhD course on Discrete Stochastic Processes. Sameer’s current research focuses on service supply chain management.

 
Ann Marie Allen (USA)
Research Associate

Ann has a BA in International Studies and Sociology from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. She earned her Master's degree in Logistics and Supply Chain Management from MIT-Zaragoza International Logistics Program. Prior to joining the Humanitarian Research Group,

Ann worked for Médecins Sans Frontières in various supply chain roles primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa.

 

Ozlem Atasever (Netherlands)
Research Associate

Özlem's research interests lie in global health, health systems and operations. She studied economics at Columbia University (New York, USA). Prior to joining the research team at INSEAD, she was with the OECD in Paris where she contributed to studies on various public policy themes.

Research Associate

Jurgita holds an MSc in Local Economic Development from the London School of Economics. She is a graduate of Vilnius University with a degree in Production Management. For the past year Jurgita has been working as a research associate for the social enterprise Pepal that together with INSEAD Social Innovation Centre runs an Executive Development Program. Jurgita's current research focuses on cross-sector partnerships. Jurgita is also responsible for the Executive Education Program on Humanitarian Logistics.

 

Maria Besiou (Greece)

Visiting Scholar

Dr. Maria Besiou holds a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. She completed her doctoral degree in 2009 on the sustainability of closed-loop supply chains using the methodological tool of System Dynamics. Her main research interests are in strategic closed-loop supply chains management, system dynamics, decision-making and humanitarian logistics. Before joining Kuehne Logistics University, she was a post-doctoral fellow at INSEAD working with the Humanitarian Research Group and the Sustainability Research Group.

 

Mahyar Eftekhar (Iran)

PhD Candidate

Mahyar is a PhD Candidate at HEC Paris School of Management in the Operations Management area. His field of specialization is Operations Management. Mahyar holds a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering and a Master's in Production & Operations Management from Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden). His dissertation is on humanitarian relief operations focusing on fleet management under supervision of Professor Luk Van Wassenhove. Before starting his PhD, Mayar worked on supply chain management and logistics and in particular worked on cross-docking systems.

PhD Candidate

Aline is a PhD student in Strategy at INSEAD. She holds a Master’s degree in International Development Economics from the Paris Institute of Political Science (Sciences Po). She wrote her Master’s thesis on the financial architecture and governance of NGOs worldwide, as an intern at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). She worked as a research associate at INSEAD’s Social Innovation Centre, and has written award-winning case studies and led research projects on public private partnerships and access to healthcare in the developing world. She has published in the International Journal of Production Economics (IJPE), and the Journal of Retailing (forthcoming). Her research interests focus on the benefits of diversity in interorganisational relationships and networks, governance issues and emerging markets.

Visiting Scholar


Alfonso teaches logistics at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University. His research on humanitarian logistics has informed the practice of vehicle fleet management at the Red Cross Movement, WFP, Oxfam UK and WVI. He has been invited to present over 30 seminars and lectures worldwide. Alfonso holds a PhD in management from INSEAD. Before doing his PhD Alfonso was a junior faculty at Universidad de los Andes School of Management in Colombia, where he taught optimization, simulation and data mining. He also has 5 years of working experience on humanitarian logistics and sustainable operations with the governments of Bogota and Colombia, respectively.

Executive in Residence

Robert McConnell's background is in transport-logistics and has been involved in humanitarian fleet operations for 10 years. Initially managing large Red Cross fleets in the Balkans during the Kosovo crisis, then working with a number of aid and development agencies to professionalise their vehicle fleet management. Co-founder of the Fleet Forum, an interagency association of more than 40 members, including international organisations, the UN, academic institutions, donors and corporate partners, whose vision is to support efficient and effective humanitarian action by catalysing the professionalisation of fleet operations, increasing road safety and security, and improving the environmental impact of fleets.

 

Orla Stapleton (Ireland)

Visiting Scholar

Orla has been a researcher with HRG since September 2006. During this time, her research has focused on fleet management in the humanitarian sector, public-private partnerships and healthcare supply chains. She has published on these topics in leading journals such the Journal of Operations Management. She has also produced multiple case studies for use in the classroom. In addition, she has presented her work at international academic (POMS) and practitioner conferences (Fleet Forum). Orla is currently based in NYU where she is studying at the Graduate School of Arts and Social Science.

 

Jon StaufferJon Stauffer (USA)

PhD Candidate

Jon is a PhD student in Operations Management at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University. His research interests include humanitarian logistics, sustainable operations and entrepreneurship. Jon holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University, a MS in Computer Engineering from Oakland University, and an MBA from the University of Michigan, Ross School of Business. He spent several years with DaimlerChrysler engineering working in vehicle design & testing and fleet management. Jon also worked as a Manager at Deloitte Consulting focused on supply chain design, warranty programs, and optimizing production operations.

Executive in Residence


A Senior Research Fellow, Yadav's main interest of study is using business models to improve pharmaceutical supply chains in emerging markets. He holds faculty appointments at both UM's Ross School of Business and the School of Public Health. Before joining WDI, he was a professor of Supply Chain Management at the MIT-Zaragoza International Logistics Program in Zaragoza, Spain. He is co-chair of the Procurement and Supply Chain Management Working Group of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership. He is an advisor and consultant to the World Bank, the World Health Organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the UK Department on International Development, and the government of Zambia.
