1st Global Forum for Responsible Management Education

This PRME forum was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, New York, USA on Thursday 4 and Friday 5 December 2008. The PRME are inspired by internationally accepted values such as the principles of the United Nations Global Compact. They seek to establish a process of continuous improvement among institutions of management education in order to develop a new generation of business leaders capable of managing the complex challenges faced by business and society in the 21st century.

“Energy Efficiency and Economic Growth: the ‘Rebound Effect’ as a driver”

In a timely publication, "Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Consumption: The Rebound Effect", edited by Horace Herring and Steve Sorrell, INSEAD Emeritus Professor Robert Ayres and Senior Research Fellow Benjamin Warr, Sustainability, argue for two linked thesis. The first is that energy efficiency has been a major driver of economic growth since the industrial revolution. The second, related thesis, is that while reduced carbon dioxide emissions are essential for long-term global sustainability, the usual policy recommendation, namely to increase the cost of energy through a carbon tax, may have an adverse impact on economic growth in the industrialised world. The Energy Club, Indevor and the INSEAD Sustainability group co-organised the alumni event "Beyond National Boundaries: Realizing Global Solutions for Global challenges" A presentation by co-Nobel Peace Laureate Mohan Munasinghe Chairman Munasinghe Institute for Development (MIND) and Vice Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Mr Munasinghe's presentation was followed by an Energy panel moderated by Paul Kleidorfer, INSEAD, (pictured). Panelists were: Lady Barbara Judge (Chairman UK Automic Energy Authority), Vivienne Cox (MBA'89D, Exceutive Vice President and CEO of Alternative Energy BP) and Bernd Schanzenbaecher (Global Co-Head Environmental Business Group).

"Capacity Building and Partnership in Development" was the topic of the 20th Alumni Sustainability Executive Roundtable held at INSEAD, Europe Campus in Fontainebleau, France and took place on wednesday 8 October 2008 from

10 am-4 pm.

This roundtable focused on exploring ways to enhance companies' role and impact on economic development through partnerships in capacity building, with a particular focus on Africa.

Luk van Wassenhove was the keynote speaker at the plenary of the IFORS Conference in Sandton, South Africa. His presentation on Thursday 17th July 2008 (programme), introduced supply chain management in the humanitarian
context and outlined the need for better preparedness and response to disasters.

"Responding to major crises: Lessons from disaster relief operations"

This joint INSEAD event organized by the Humanitarian Research Group and the UK Alumni Association, took place on July 3rd 2008 in London. The conference looked into what NGOs actually do in response to major disasters and how they mobilise to bring aid and relief.

Renato J. Orsato presented an article on June 18-20 2008, entitled “Scale and Sustainability for the Automotive Industry” co-authored by Peter Wells and Paul Nieuwenhuis at the 16th GERPISA Conference (Permanent Group for the Study of the Automobile Industry and its Employees) in Turin, Italy.




European Federation for Management Development Award

9th June 2008

At the yearly EFMD Conference in Oslo, Norway on June 9th 2008, Luk Van Wassenhove received the European Federation for Management Development (EFMD) 2007 Case Writing Competition Winner Certificate for the case “Capital Markets or Alms? An Emerging Paradigm Shift in Disaster Funding”, co-authored with Ramina Samii, in the category Public Sector Innovations.

ISEP members and local social entrepreneurs gather in Dublin

6-7 June 2008

Nearly forty social entrepreneurs from across Ireland joined with more than twenty ISEP network members from as far away as India and North America for a dynamic combination conference and reunion on 6 and 7 June 2008 in Dublin.  A combination of speakers, discussion groups and plenary sessions brought the topic alive and created a platform to exchange ideas, innovations and networking.
