Certificate in Corporate Governance

Overview

INSEAD aims for its Certificate in Corporate Governance to become a global credential amongst board members operating internationally – one of the first of its kind offered by an academic institution.  The certificate attests of a director’s commitment to continuously develop her or his effectiveness and excellence as a Director, by applying and building upon the skills and knowledge acquired through their successful attendance of the International Directors Programme and completion of the certification requirements.

— Demonstration of the necessary credibility to assume board roles

— Successful participation in the three programme modules

— Capability of application of the programme learning to actual board contexts – and

insightful reflection on the programme topics (attested through a written report)

— Evidence of a spirit of continuous self-improvement in board service

— Oral defense of the report at the discretion of the Certification Committee

Successful completion of the certificate enables participants to become connected to an exclusive international network of senior peer directors, who stay connected with each other, with INSEAD and its faculty for continuous exchange on research and practice.

Latest news - Second Award Ceremony

Singapore, 26 February 2013

The second Ceremony for the Award of the INSEAD Certificates in Corporate Governance took place in Singapore on 26 February 2013.

We are most pleased to congratulate thirteen new holders of the Certificate , mostly from the second promotion of the International Directors Programme.

John Lim, Chairman of the Singapore Institute of Directors and Ilian Mihov, our Deputy Dean, Faculty & Research, handed out the Certificates at a lovely dinner held at the Paradise Pavilion in Singapore's Marina Bay Financial Center.

Participants also attended the INSEAD Directors Forum on Governance in Asia-Pacific on the Singapore Campus.

As becomes customary, the day was comprised of panels by participants sharing the learning from their certification papers and program attendance, and on their sharing of experience as international Directors in the Asia Pacific Region.

The afternoon was devoted to guest speakers' presentations by representatives from the Singapore Exchange (Nels Friets, SVP and Head of Securities), the Economic Development Board of Singapore (Julian Ho, Assistant Managing Director), and the Singapore Institute of Directors (John Lim, Chairman).  Our co-Dean Ilian Mihov, Professor of Economics, shared his latest research on the rise of Asia, growth rates, trends, risks and opportunities.

The next Award Ceremony and Directors Forum will take place on 13 and 14 September 2013 in Fontainebleau.

First Award Ceremony

Fontainebleau, 7 September 2012

We were delighted to hand out the first INSEAD Certificates in Corporate Governance (ICCG) to the seventeen participants of the International Directors Programme who have successfully met the requirements on Friday 7 September 2012.

The ceremony was followed by a one day INSEAD Directors Forum where the participants were invited to attend a session on Active Investors and the Board based on the INSEAD Stork case study and led by former INSEAD Professor Philippe Haspeslagh, the author of this case. In the afternoon participants took part in two panels where they presented their learning from their programme as applied to their directors role and governance responsibilities.  The Forum concluded with a panel discussing governance challenges in the funds industry.

Testimonies

“My certification paper helped me in reflecting on what I had learned from the International Directors Programme and how I could practically implement it in my Board activities. The paper has given me a blue print for actions and points to be considered in the coming months and years. I have already launched some of the actions from my paper at the board and will continue to refer back to the document and update as necessary. I see it as a living document.”

Donough Tierney, VP International Development

EADS

“The certification process pushed me to reflect on past experience and extract valuable lessons in a way which simply does not happen in the normal pattern of business life”.
